ngl, the new ui3 is pretty good. the only thing i dont like is the toolbar position. im still not used to it. maybe add an option to move it to the top?
There’s a reason no other desktop creative tools have the toolbar at the bottom… +1 for at least the control to move if up top, although I would argue that it should be the default state for the UI
I’m switching to the classic view just because of this tool bar placement in the bottom center, it interferes so much, until I can move it, I’m reverting.
Hey folks, totally agree - this is fixing a non-issue. Figma was great before, all the new floating toolbars and menus do is add noise around them. Just look at the new floating menus / bars on each side - the space between them and the design underneath is of no use whatsoever, but the design bleeding through adds noise to the toolbar itself. This is a regression actually in terms of usability. Please allow people to stay on the previous UI - I will stay there as long as I can.
It does seem like the new UI has been influenced by Miro, as well as Canva and some other mobile-first, “easy design” apps. I wouldn’t mind if it wasn’t kind of an industry standard for UX/UI now. I hate to lose that level of usability to Figma trying to court the “automate away your designers!” crowd.
It would be interesting to see how many Figma users leave the whole menu open while they design. Like honestly I can’t think of a reason to minimize the new floating menus, unless I’m presenting… and they already had a setting for that.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE!! This toolbar fixed to the bottom is awful. Do you know how big our screens are? And how long it took to train ourselves to go to the top. I would love to be able to DRAG the toolbar right where I am working. Pretty pretty please.
If not, just an option of top or bottom would work.
I’m OK with the trend but I hope there’s an option to have it flushed to either left / right / middle so that if you’re right handed, it’s easier to grab things on the bottom right.
I don’t know I feel like it’s so far down that I dont even click on the tools… I just memorise the hotkeys!
100% would be better at the top
I much prefer having the toolbar at the top and the panels framed, not floating. Some of my files have the old UI, which I prefer, and others have the new. This threw me off.
Please create an option to have the top toolbar and the framed panels.
I’m investigating if I should use FigJam or an alternative, so far I really love FigJam except for the positioning of the toolbar. Would love to be able to put it on the left or right (having an option for different preferences works).
Especially as my setup is mostly on wide screen monitors, vertical space is at a premium but I have oodles of horizontal pixels to use for fixed UI elements.
okay, so I think the UI3 update is really good and all of that but the bar where you pick the mouse, frame, etc. should be moved to the top (if possible to the left) or atleast be able to move the bar.
I am also instinctually looking for the toolbar at the top, and it feels awkward being at the bottom. I don’t use FigJam much so I’m not used to it. It also conflicts with the MacOS dock if you are working in the browser & it’s not fullscreen.
I suggest add a grabbing handle to it, so we can dock it to where we like it?
Lifesaver tip, you can switch back to the old UI by clicking the ? at the bottom right of the interface and click “Go back to previous UI”.
Here echoing the other thoughts, I think the toolbar on the bottom could be useful in some scenarios, but we should have the option to drag or dock it to the top or bottom of the screen. The way my desk is set up, my laptop screen often blocks the bottom inch of my monitor… Exactly where the toolbar is.
For now we still have the option to revert to UI2 but assuming that will be going away at some point. This seems to be a common request. Adobe Photoshop let you customize your panels and toolbar, attach, reattach, move around, this was useful to operate in different modes, editing a photo, working on a layout.
I wish I could move the new bottom tool bar where ever I want in the interface. Would give me more freedom to design as I see fit.
I love the new UI of the beta version, yet I have the problem of navigating in terms of eye direction which relates to this bar and it placement. hence i would want to make the bar to be movable and static, thank you
I can’t use UI3. Toolbar completely hidden by my open laptop screen slightly overlapping.
Only options are:
- close the laptop screen I use all the time for proto/mirror previews
- Find something to lift the huge 49 inch monitor
- Go back to UI2.
Only option is the last one.
Also, the floating panels (that are actually fixed and non movable) are visually similar to my own product design work (some rounded corners, dark colors in places) and it visually clashes.
This is not a practical improvement. In practice, this general UI update is not an improvement. I’d suggest finding some options for us users to configure the UI in a way that works for us.
Placing the toolbar at the bottom is difficult to use because my focus is usually on the upper half of the screen. Having to constantly look down to interact with the toolbar is really inconvenient and strains my eyes.
I tried to live with it for a few weeks now but I give up. Toolbar position at the bottom of the screen is not workign at all. Thankful that the option to revert the UI is still avaialable. 🤞 this is fixed in UI3 ASAP
Would love to see the UI3 toolbar to be freely placed on the canvas. Much like Photoshop solves this, with a simple handle on the end of the toolbar. Right now for me it doesn’t work on the bottom half.
I would even go a step further and suggest that it can be placed back in it’s old position, just like Photoshop handles all toolbars.
Who’s with me on this?
Please make it possible to move it to the top 🙏 The current bottom placement makes it impossible to use Figma with on Macs with automatic hidden dock.
I made a little demo of what I mean. With the handle people could control the position of the bars and make them “stick” to the sides (just like in Photoshop).
Figma – 24 Sep 24
This is only partially solving the issue. Unfortunately, the bottom toolbar is still floating and many of the problems listed with the floating side panels are also valid for the bottom toolbar.
I’m happy user feedback is being heard and appropriately integrated, but this announcing “fixed panels are back” when 1 out of 3 is still a floater is misleading.
Thanks for you feedback, @Rui_P_Cabrinha!
I’ve moved your reply to a more relevant topic where the UI3 team is tracking feedback and improvements for the toolbar.
The top half of the application is where most of the utility resides. Most apps position their tools across the top for this reason — easy, quick, and efficient access. This is crucial for the most important actions in Figma.
