Variables for stroke width?

Really excited about the new variables, but I noticed that they’re not available yet for stroke width. Is that something that will be coming later?

cheers!

It seems like Figma just forgot to make support for variables for the stroke width field.

Up-voting this idea.
Variables are absolutely a great add to Figma. But, not having variables for strokes seems like a missing piece.

Hope @Figma_Support consider this for future releases.

Hey there. This is already under development, read this article:

Figma Learn - Help Center

Coming soon
While variables is evolving and growing, we want to help you plan ahead. Here’s what we’re working on.

  1. Support for additional variable types
  • Image variable type: Image variables will allow images to dynamically switch between modes, such as logo switching or product image switching for prototyping. They will be applicable anywhere you can apply image fills.
  • Typography variable type: We’re exploring how we want to support typography variables. We want to provide a way to switch between combinations of typography properties, like font families, sizes, spacing.
  1. Support for additional properties
  • Additional property fields: Soon, you’ll be able to apply variables to stroke width, effect colors, layer opacities, and more.
  • Additional component property types: Currently, you can only assign variables to variant properties. We’re working to support additional component property types.

While you wait for stroke variables you could use this 😛

Also wanting stroke width to be set to a variable

Semi_Design_UED-MED

+1, we need apply variable on stroke width too!!

Miguel_Olivera

We are starting to use variables to update our design system. It is really useful in terms of spacing or rounded corners but is not possible to apply for borders.

I wanted to share with you this though and kindly ask if can be possible release it.

Thanks!

We need to apply variables on stroke to properly scale our components. Please add this feature!

Ian_Hernandez1

Need this asap

Hoby-Van-Hoose

I guess I didn’t see this was missing until August and didn’t see this post until now.

Sara_Sal

Hoping to have this feature live soon! 🥰

Voting for +1

Surprised this was left out. We could really use this!

I’m glad variables support for stroke weight has been added, however, you can only add them to shapes through the “Custom” function. Feels very repetitive to have to add the same variable for all sides of a shape. But the biggest issue is that because of this, you can’t add variables to line shapes, since there’s no custom option. I’m assuming this is a bug unless I’m missing something obvious. Thanks!

Right click that field and select “apply variable.” I was just trying to figure this out too

You saved my life… Thanks a lot!!

As of right now, applying variables to stroke is incredibly counterintuitive. Right-click → apply variable. Why not use the same pattern that was used everywhere else? Cog.

A second thing that would be incredibly useful would be to have the stroke property exposed and overrideable. This is incredibly useful when you need to have icons with different stroke sizes. Instead of having to create 5 variants, you can create a single one, scale it based on your needs, and simply override the variable attached with a different stroke size.

This would also save a lot of memory for situations where you have large icons sets that are part of the design system.

Thanks a lot. This also helped me @Figma_Moderation Please I hope this is now visible in UI3, cause I believe a lot of people had the same confusion for UI2. I don’t know how to get the UI3 as I have already joined the waitlist. But no change since since the announcement
