Wait what? I tried flattening two images - obviously trying to combine two images to one and I get a Bastardized version of not sure what. Am I doing it wrong?

Flattening two Images doesn't really flatten?

Instead of flattening you need to rasterize them, since flatten is a vector object command but you want a rasterized result.
Menu Object → Rasterize Selection
