For your example we indeed use the slots method, although you are right that this is more of a workaround. We also provide template components with or without pre-nested components and pre-applied variables, our designers can detache and edit. Yeah, they are detached then but it still saves them time to create screen designs and we are still able to do changes on the global, variables level.
