Aside from SVG, there’s practically no reason to use another format on the web, especially with its alpha support. So there’s no reason to not include it as an export option; and as others have said, the compression needs to be right as I’ve seen different results with different WebP conversion tools.
Looking at this thread I just discovered that I commented a year ago; the TinyImage plugin still costs more than Figma itself and I just can’t (although their compression is good).
@IraX Yes, the single image issue was something I suffered through until I had to do a very large set of images. I saved myself some sanity points by using the Pixelied converter
The output quality is not quite as good but it was the closest I could find that supported batch.
I also tried to contact who might own webp-converter.com and got no reply. I’d really like to know what compression engine they use and if it’s open source.
Hi @Josep_99, Thanks for sharing your thoughts! I found the other community member asking for something similar here. So I merged your post to have all the feedback in one place!
I did a quick search in the community and found plugin that might be handy for you meanwhile: TinyImage Compressor
Please feel free to explore on your own!
Is there any reason this was closed? I would LOVE this. Animated gifs are the only other way I currently know to have animations with transparency in a prototype. Lottie can’t play in prototypes, and .webm is the only format I know of that will do transparency, and I haven’t found a smooth/easy way to make a .webm from After effects or any other tool
H265 in MP4 supports alpha channels (i.e. transparency). VP9 and AV1 do as well same with .mov. It’s been a while since I tried it, so give it a shot and let us know if it works 😊.
Figma, what gives? I understand there are other features, but the idea that export to the leading image format, webP, hasn’t been baked into Figma is ludicrous.
Agree with @Robert_Wolter - It feels as though Figma is ignoring this feature request. Yet, we can now better sort unassigned drafts. The compression is unparalleled in any format and in just a short time, it’s already being used on over 20% of the top 1m, 100k, 10k, and 1k websites.
We mostly use webp on all our web builds atm, this should be one fo the native export options. I can’t see how it would be particularly hard to add it as an option to the existing export options.
