If there is an option to duplicate the Text Styles / Color Styles folder then it makes it easy when creating design systems. Attached is a screenshot of the idea.

I’m needing this exact thing so much right now. It would help a ton.

Would be great to duplicate and create a master style.

This would be a maaaaajor time saver.

This would be amazingly helpful

it is the most essential thing!

This would be a great feature. In the mean time, here you have a work around:

  1. Put all the styles you want to copy into a folder and then cut those from your file.

  2. Undo the cut, so you don’t lose the original styles.

  3. Go to a new file and paste them.

  4. Create a text layer and apply any of the pasted styles, so Figma allows you to rename the wrapping folders.

  5. Rename the wrapping folder and any other folders you want to duplicate.

  6. Cut them again and paste them in the original file.

  7. Rearrange and delete wrapping folder, if required.

Hope that was helpful. Take care! 😊

Thank you so much for this tip! Saved me much time.

is there any plugin for renaming the layers based on color palette naming?

I use the tip from @Adrian25 and the Batch Styler Plugin to quickly rename or change the styles:

https://www.figma.com/community/plugin/818203235789864127/Batch-Styler

This is not

i mean

if there is a plugin available that can automatically rename layers based on their corresponding color palette names?

Beware of that workaround if you already have published styles. It has broken a lot of my applied styles in other files (swapping them for the duplicate)

Even better if we have styles/design tokens code editor.

There is a workaround that actually works:

1- Cut the styles you want duplicate

2- Undo so you have your styles back (now the styles and folder structure are copied to your clipboard)

3- Paste the copied styles into a new Figma file then save the file

4- Close both files

5- Open both files again

6- Now you can edit the styles in the new file then cut and paste them into the original file

7- DONE!

Absolutely need this feature.

This would be great. The suggested place in the UX is perfect as well. Lot’s of space there.

you the man Adrian! thx 🫶

The following is even simpler:

  1. Duplicate the file

  2. Rename the styles in the duplicate file

  3. Cut styles from duplicate file and paste in the original file

  4. Delete duplicate file

There must be some insanely complicated technical reason for not being able to copy or duplicate a style inside Figma.

I use Design System Organizer plugin for the purpose.

Yet another important feature that Figma has left unattended.

It is a basic necessity, add a duplicate button and it will save us so much time.

Hello, I think it would be a great idea to have the option to copy the color styles, fonts, etc. that are created. Currently the user can only cut them, so if I need to copy these styles to another project I have to cut them and press ctrl + z to go back, this is a bad thing for me because the files that have these styles applied, I need to reapply ! So it would be great if Figma had the option to copy styles and not just cut!

Hi Lara, Thank you for sharing your thoughts on Styles!

In Figma, we have Library! A library that lets you reuse components, styles, and variables across your design files. Anyone on a paid plan can publish a library. Anyone on any plan can access published libraries.

You can learn more details ‌here: Guide to libraries in Figma

Hope it helps! Please let me know if there’s anything else I can help with!

Thanks,

Junko

Exactly what i was just searching for too! Why only cut, and no copy? Setting up a shared library is too much (or not even a possibility), if you only want to use some of the styles in another project.

In my use case, i’d copy my basic font structure (headers, labels, body variants etc.) to a new project and edit them to match the new style instead of creating them manually. And since it’s still mostly concepting, i have no intentions of “properly” setting up the document just yet - just fast and dirty would be enough 😀

Hello, I know the library option, but I believe that for a specific case where I just want to get some color styles, the copy option is totally adequate, the library is important for publishing component patterns, but having to publish only to use 2 or 3 colors that are there, for example, becomes unnecessary, apart from the fact that I would need the paid plan to publish, for the common user and learner of Figma, having to pay for the plan just for that is not viable. Still, it would be great to have the simple alternative of copying the styles, I would really like you to evaluate this, it’s something simple and I believe it will benefit a lot of people!

I completely agree with you, it is unnecessary to publish a library just to get some styles, as this is part of the paid plan, limiting the free user.
