Hi there!

I’m wondering if there’s a reason why the only option for a TV device frame is 1280x720 when the standard for TV app design is 1920x1080 (at least for Apple’s tvOS). 📺

I found that this question was discussed here in 2022, but the thread has closed and 1280 remains the only TV device frame size.

I created an entire prototype (screen recording linked below) at 1280 because I wanted to present it to the client within the slick-looking TV device frame, but now our dev team has to scale everything up 1.5x. For the most part this isn’t a big problem; it just creates one extra step in the workflow that shouldn’t really be necessary.

So does anyone know why Figma’s only TV device frame option is 1280? Is there some reason why TV apps should be designed at this size rather than 1920?

Thanks!

Hey there,

Thanks for the post! I’m checking this with the internal team. I’ll get back to you once I have anything I can share about the preset frame.

Thanks for your patience!

I’m curious about this question too.

Unfortunately still no reply. Would be nice to have an explanation (or a new FHD preset from Figma).

still no solution? Full HD should be the minimum in 2024, but 4K size is getting better. Any chance to get an update on this topic? Thanks.

Hey All, sorry for the delayed reply!

The team confirmed that there was no real, good reason for not adding this frame size, but they considered that users would rarely navigate using a point/mouse on a TV. This means that they would likely use directional buttons instead, which isn’t something that we have a good way of supporting yet.

That said, I’ve updated this topic into a feature request. This is now on our team’s radar for possible future implementation. Please do cast your vote up top and continue to express your interest, if you’d like to see this in a future release! 👆

Thanks for the update! I would like to add, though, that I have prototyped multiple high-fidelity TV app interfaces using Key/Gamepad triggers. The only keys needed to simulate a smart TV remote are the directional arrow keys and Enter key, so this method works just fine.

Noted, @Jonathan_Hooper!

Thanks for the additional context. We’ll pass this onto the team.
