As per the Figma tips page, we have been using the “images as styles” trick to re-use commonly used images in from our team library. Whenever we try to use some of these styles however, it will be automatically removed and the message “an invalid image or thumbnail was removed” is displayed. We’ve been struggling with understanding why certain image styles are affected. Is there a way to see if an image/thumbnail is invalid and if so, how do we repair them??
Same problem, pls fix it! @Figma_Support
Same issue here.
This is still happening, and it’s becoming a royal pain. Any updates on what might be causing the issue and when a fix can be issued? @Figma_Support
+1 to this issue happening to me as well.
It happened just now to me too
It happened to me today, I had just pasted images in another figma file from finder and went to another file to paste those same images. I solved it for now by duplicating and renaming the image files on my desktop and pasting the copies into the second file; at least it worked . Seems to be some kind of uniqueness blocking logic.
+1 this has been happening to me, very frustrating for files will a lot of images!
+1 having same issue.
Same issue - across multiple accounts on Chrome between an image copy and paste.
Same issue - team project’s image thumnail was removed all. need a @Figma_Support reply

Hey All,
The most common reason you’ll see an “An invalid image or thumbnail was removed” error message is if there’s an image in the elements you’re copying that isn’t able to be pasted because it’s “invalid” or corrupted in some way.
This could be because the image was never properly “saved” when pasted into the original file, or because the pasting actions is failing in some way. It can also be because our servers don’t think that the file should have access to that image, which may be the case if you’re pasting between files in different spaces.
For the images that aren’t pasting over, can you try the following?
- In the original file select the image
- In the Inspect panel, open CSS table view
- Use the ‘File name’ link to open the source image in a new browser tab
- If the image loads there, right click to copy and paste or save and insert it into your new file.
- If the image does not load there but still loads on the canvas, this indicates that the original image has been corrupted in some way. If this is the case you can export the image layer using the export settings at the bottom of the Properties panel and insert it into the new file.
I have found a solution for that. before you copy the images to your other file please drag all the images that you have used from your desktop to that file. Then you can copy-paste those images without being removed.
Experience this on both the Figma desktop app (Mac) and on the browser version.
Yep, same here although I believe I overloaded page with many images and they are just too heavy. First, all the device holders exported from Device Models plugins started disappearing. When I touched them and scaled a bit - they reappeared. Well but this was for short time. The next day ALL images are blank ☹
I think best is to have a spearate document for photos, and then carfully copy to new document and watch if not too heavy.
Hmm, Sketch has something like “compress images”, then you can “revert to original size” - Figma team? Is this on your plate? I thought I can never crash Figma … but with 30-40 higher resolution images - it does 🙂
Wow - I actually found solution to my problems, based on some comments above. Yep the problem is the source where the initial images were dropped or created. I closed Figma, reopened only file with images and let it load.
Then opened other pages were images were used, and my blank images started appearing!! Yupi!
@dvaliao
I am also facing same issue
I am not able to update images even from my desktop. To update the image, I have to copy the image by opening it from the css table view first, then paste it in the figma artboard, then export it, then I am able to use that image.
Please find solution to this problem as soon as possible
I think this solution perfectly, this workssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss
Thank you @dvaliao. This worked for me. But is a permanent fix coming? This is a pretty significant slow-down in productivity (and increased frustration 🙂 )
The problem still here. I can’t put images from 1-st account to 2-d. Even if I export png from figma in 1-st account and import back png here I have message about “invalid image” and impossible to do enithing 😒
The problem is still here. None of the solutions mentioned above worked for me.
Indeed. We tested so many different approaches and we could not figure out a pattern. It seems completely random.
I used Figma to study and I was just pasting photo of book into editor taken on iPhone. Now all the images have gone from my lesson and pasting same images again gives me this error.
Same for me, I also tried the solutions above, if @Figma_Support could provide us with a solution or fix the problem that would be amazing! Thanks
Same here @Figma_Support
