Not found (404) for the Main file but branch works

I recently updated a branch, then approved / merged it to main. I got a message telling me I didn’t have permission to change the main file (I don’t have the exact message). I then asked the owner of the file to allow me edit permission so I could merge the branch. When they went to open the main file it gives a Not found (404) error. The branch is still available but says “Approved”. Have you seen this before?
