Pixel-perfect design may have been a desirable goal in the past, but it’s becoming increasingly outdated. Instead, REM-based design has emerged as the standard in modern web development.

In my current enterprise environment, we don’t use pixels as a basis for our web components, but REM. As we offer a font size switcher in our applications, REM is key here. Designing components in pixels for different font sizes is cumbersome and inefficient. It’s time to move away from this legacy approach.

To create a more flexible and scalable design system, we need to adopt REM-based design for fonts, paddings, and other elements throughout our design. By doing so, we can create a more adaptable system that’s easier to maintain and customize.

Figma, please bring it on!
