Is it possible to link Component instance to variant?

I’ ve been doing this tutorial for an interactive dropdown menu Create a DROPDOWN MENU in Figma (Tutorial) - YouTube and from 9:25 I am having difficulties. It seems there are instances being connected to variants, and that doesn’t work when I try to do it. Any help would be much appreciated.
