Question

Find colors in hidden layers

I’ve moved from color styles to variables in a prototype that has thousands of layers in hundreds of screens, compiled over 3 years in 3 different component sets. Grooming this to replace colors is very painful because only the visible colors are available. Is there another way to do this that is selective (not global find-and-replace)?

Hi there,

Thanks for your patience. As I checked with the internal team, the selection colors only show for visible layers. I passed your opinion to our product team for future improvements. Sorry that I couldn’t help much, but please feel free to post if you have any other questions.

Thanks,
Toku

This would be a great feature especially for Library management where some elements may be hidden for the default states/offering of components.

Hi, Any updates on how to see all the selection colors whether they are visible or not? I can see them in the document colors but there isn’t an easy way to locate them and select them for updating. Thanks!

We can’t guarantee if it will be implemented or not but we keep sharing your feedback for future consideration!

Thanks,
Toku

+1 on this.
This becomes important when designing large design systems, as the file must be kept tidy and clean of removed variables to avoid misunderstandings between designers or in collaboration with developers.

I recently switched to using variables for colors, but it’s a nightmare to try to bring large files up to date with the colors because the hidden layers are all ignored. Plugins I’ve found can help find a hidden layer, but it’s still difficult and extremely tedious to update them one by one when there’s hundreds of hidden layers on some files. There really needs to be a way to find and select hidden layers to replace colors on a large scale.

Exactly. Tedious hardly describes it.
