Figma Automatically added seats & charged me for 6 months

Hello community,

I noticed a discrepancy on my bank statement where I was charged $50 per month by Figma instead of the usual $16. Upon investigation, I found that Figma had automatically upgraded my seats without my authorization and charged me for 6 months without my knowledge (that’s $200 extra dollars).

I reached out to support, and they informed me that they could only refund 3 months, with no further explanation provided.

Can someone please explain why Figma’s settings automatically added seats that I neither needed nor requested? This seems like a concerning choice and dark pattern.

As a loyal Figma user since 2016, I am requesting a refund for the additional 3 months of unauthorized charges.

Hi @Emily_Groubert, First off, thanks so much for flagging this issue to us. We’re really sorry to hear that you’ve run into this billing issue, and we totally get how frustrating this can be.

I see that you are continuing to have conversations with our support team regarding this matter. Your patience is super appreciated while you wait for their next response.

For anyone else in the community who might be bumping into a similar problem, it often happens when additional seats are added outside the original annual agreement.

And, please be advised that the “Viewer” seat can self-upgrade to full seats without approval from the team admin.
You can refer to the following documents for details and a walkthrough:

To prevent additional charges in the future, you can also change the team’s default role in the admin settings from “Viewer” to “Viewer - Restricted.” This will assign a restricted role to any new team collaborators, allowing only admins to upgrade them to paid editors.
You can refer to this guide:

I also recommend that an admin set up email notifications to stay informed about when someone upgrades and the actions prompting the upgrade.
Here’s a guide on how to get those notifications set up:
