Our design system file is view-only for basically all users. We have typography styles for desktop and mobile, which are defined in variable modes. But as a view-only user, it’s not possible to see whether text is using the desktop or mobile variable mode.

A user should be able to see which variable mode is active even in view-only.

Even nicer, a user should be able to view the variables and modes in view-only.

Hey @David_Goligorsky, thanks for the feedback!

We’ll pass this onto our team for future consideration. Don’t forget to vote up top! ☝️

Not to derail, but suggest what seems to be a natural solution to communicate your ideas. I make a prototype, some sort of presentation where anyone could see how all these pieces play together. So they just play it and have to experience of what you have designed. And it’s cool that these day it’s very simple to add more depth with variables and modes.

My example contains only colors, but it’s fairly easy to expand to every other component of a design system, including typography. I use component sets and an ability to set variable mode in prototyping.

In the demo below I choose one of four accent colors and I make it light or dark using exactly one component set and the ability to set variable mode with interactions like click or tap.
