Reorder variable collections list

Another must have, also everyone please upvote copy/move groups into other collections. Thanks

Russ-Campbell

We desperately need some way to sort variables. Ideally they’d respect the order from the local variables panel. Having them sort by creation date is really going to hinder our adoption of tokens. This is critical.

Guillaume_Huchet

Having the same issue, I created the primitives before the tokens (which is logical lol) so now I’m stuck with the way they are displayed in all of my files…

We definitely need a fix for that please Figma 🥲

I think I found a solution for that problem – in the Local variables menu you can drag and drop the single variables and they’ll appear in that order once you open the color list. Hope that helps 🙂

Randy_Bascue

Yeah, this has been quite the annoyance. I don’t need the primitives first. Leads to so much unnecessary scrolling

Gerardo_Cid1

Please fix this, we need to be able to reorder collections. Thanks

A link to that Share topic would have been helpful Josh.

This is the topic. I just mentioned that I updated the category to “Share an idea” so that it can be voted on.

avt-dylano

Thanks Josh! I can’t wait until we can reorder them! My product designers hate me 😭 Hahaha.

david_ic

This is seriously upsetting after spending so much time setting these up only to find that you can’t reorder collections. It’s not like Tokens Studio where you can at least copy paste the code or Invision DSM where you can edit the json file. I might just have to delete the new collection of variables and themes and start over in the main collection. Thankfully I didn’t map all the components to these yet.

Cory_McKinnon2

What a disappointment. Got a quarter of the way through bringing our new color library over to variables then had to check how to re-order the collections… back to styles I guess… face palm.

Chuck_Schutz

Each day to navigate to the correct variable in the right collection wastes my time. Please add sort controls to speed up my work.

And please make the variables drop-down panel wider, and longer, and keyboard shortcuts as well. I am grateful Figma has given us variable functionality, BUT please develop an entire set of controls for this wonderful feature will be gratefully enjoyed!

chuahdary_Shan

I am unable to find or navigate to the current style in components. It always starts from the top, and I have to scroll through all the styles to identify the current one. I’m not sure if this is a bug or a feature.

I need to go back to the old one.

Cam_Villanueva

I had the same problem! But then I realized that if you change the name of the collection, they will re-ordered. I imaging they are sort by modified date…

So… I had created first the primitives, and after my tokens. But when I changed the name collection from “tokens” to “color-tokens”, the last ones are now first. Now, when I use them in the picker, I have the tokens first 💪

Collections are almost usable, but without being able to resort the order its sort of dead in the water, shame it seemed like it would solve some of my organizational issues being able to use collections effectively.

This thing is such a pain.
Came here to find a solution for this & it looks like it hasn’t been solved yet.

Dan_Traian_Roman1

How is this a share an idea ticket? To me it really feels likes its a bug, or at the very least a missed feature.

It’s not a feature request to ask for the order of shown collection inside the usage panel to be the same as in the creation variable panel. I keep seeing this trend to drown bug reports in “feature ideas” to be voted, and absolutely never implemented after dying in some backlog somewhere.

Hragatron

Also just ran into this issue, newish library and as I’ve been adding primitives and tokens, me and my designers are leaning towards grabbing whatever they see first instead of scrolling all the way down to the tokens section. Agree that this is more of a UX bug. A fix would be awesome and help a lot!

Carey_Spies1

Agreed, I personally view this as a bug and not an “idea” or “feature request”. My designers pick the “wrong” tokens all the time because they grab the first thing they see like @Hragatron mentioned

Derek-Torsani-WMF

As much as I want to see this issue fixed, ie. give us the control to reorder collections, and not just by renaming to use alphabetical or numerical ordering, I just wanted to understand why it worked the way it does, and what the logic is behind the current behavior. I think I figured it out.

The order of the collections within the window where you would apply them, whether color or number, is determined by the amount of variables within that collection. They are ordered from least to most.

Still just want to see this fixed though.

Agni_Kaster

To me it sounds like a bug with an easy fix… because it sounds the collections are sort by ID and not alphabeticaly at the very least.

@Josh The “Selection Colors” module is also a disaster area.

This works for files that access vars in external library, but does not seem to work within the library it’s self.

Am I missing something?

Cam_Villanueva

I made it in the same library… is it not your case? They have a default sorting by last updated, or at least it is what I think…

Alex_Leduc

Crazy…
The local variables feature looks like an Adobe product.
