I wonder if there are any plans on your roadmap to enable viewing variant descriptions directly within Figma?

Currently, only design system editors can see the variant library and associated descriptions, which makes it challenging for other team members to understand the purpose or intended use of specific variants. Having a way for all users—designers, developers, and stakeholders—to view variant descriptions without requiring editor access would significantly enhance collaboration, improve understanding of the design system, and reduce dependency on editors for clarification.

This feature would empower teams to work more efficiently and ensure consistency in using components across projects.

Hi @Melanie_Owubokiri, Thanks for sharing your thoughts about this!

It sounds like you might be looking for a way for viewers to see variant descriptions. I definitely agree that these descriptions are crucial for team alignment.

Please rest assured that they can already do this by selecting the variant on the canvas and checking the "Properties" panel on the right sidebar (The section indicated as B in the image below).

For more information, please check out the "Properties panel (view only access)" section of the Add descriptions to styles, components, and variables.

I hope this clarifies things! If my understanding is incorrect, please let us know.

Thanks again!

Hey, so sorry. I meant Variables descriptions
