Bring Back List View for Your Files

Kate_Garrigan1

I saw the update, “We updated the file browser to create a more consistent and seamless experience as you use Figma products.”

I have too many files in projects -- I need the List View to skim them fast. This change does not make a more consistent and seamless experience, it’s slowing me down and making it much harder to find the files I need. Please bring this back, this is impeding my ability to find things.

Is there a plugin I can use to get my list view back?

Hey everyone – I’m a PM at Figma and really appreciate the feedback here! We’ve re-enabled list view for everyone and you should be able to see this once you refresh the page.

Let me know if you are still seeing any issues, and please let me know your thoughts on the other changes in the file browser.

Thanks again for the passionate feedback, we always love hearing your thoughts!

100% what OP mentioned.

This update is plain dumb. You want to improve the cards view - fine. Removing list view entirely is a huge downgrade for teams that work with big projects and plenty of files.

If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

Thanks

Agreed. The way files are viewed should be up to the user, removing one option completely doesn't make it better.

Please bring it back.

Это самое тупое обновление которое только можно было выпустить, верните списочный вид карточек

Koen_Holleboom

This is truly stupid. Having 50+ projects without the list view is unworkable.

Whoever thought of this does not understand working in an enterprise environment nor in a volatile agency. Neither do they understand how list-skimming works in general → Leaving users with a huge cognitive load to skim through a visual-heavy view to get to their goals.

Interesting choice for a UX tool to take the control of the view-options out of the hands of the user…

“Mildly infuriating”

RobertLindell

I agree 100%. This is such a bad implementation. Organising your files by name doesnt even make sense anymore because of this change. Please bring back list view. I have 30+ projects ordered by date and name and the thumbnail overview is bad.

As stated above, this update is just a BAD idea!!! I NEED the list view, it’s how I find older files by date… BRING BACK THE LIST VIEW ASAP!!!   It was crazy to remove this tool…. if someone doesn’t use it fine, but a LOT of us do use it…. it is NECESSARY!!  BRING IT BACK!!!!!

This is an absolute mess. I work in an enterprise environment with multiple teams and hundreds of files. I seriously need a list view to find the right files fast. Card view simply doesn’t cut it. Please bring it back.

Agree with all the comments above. When working with big volumes of files it's impossible to navigate in a thumbnail view. All of our files use Jira issue number in the beginning of the file names, making its easy to search and navigate in list view. Please return the feature back, I can't imagine what would be the reason for removing it in the first place.

Christopher_Gibson

Another +1 for “please return this feature.”

Thomas_Tom-B

To be honest, it makes so little sense on a pro tool that I thought it was a bug.

So fully agree with the comments above.

Just got this from Figma Support:

“We’ve removed the List View toggle to help create a smoother browsing experience. We believe that the Grid View makes it easier to scan and find files quickly, but we understand how this change will take time to get used to. Your input is invaluable as we continue to look for ways to enhance navigation. If you have any other thoughts, suggestions, or feedback, we’d love to hear them.

Please let me know if there’s anything else I can help you with,”

It's a really stupid decision that makes no sense. If they had said it was to save time for their developers, it would make sense. But claiming that removing List View provides a better user experience is just dumb.

It doesn't provide a smoother browsing experience when you have many files. On the contrary, it makes it much harder to get an overview.

The use of truncated filenames makes it even worse, as it's now impossible to distinguish between files with similar names, so you have to keep clicking in and out of files to find the right one.

We expect better from you Figma!

Who is “we”???  Obviously not folks who use this platform every day….

AGAIN…. BRING IT BACK!!!!!

The “GRID VIEW” does NOT make it easier, it makes it MUCH MORE DIFFICULT to find older files, let alone duplicate and rename for transferring…..  it is NOT an improvement, it is causing MORE WORK…. so BRIN IT BACK!   Please…..

What a disappointing answer… “You’ll get used to it.”

There are serious usability problems (truncated names is a great example...) and we’re supposed to get used to it? Used to a bad experience is the sort of thing I try to work against, everyday, and this is the tool that’s supposed to help me do that.

David Salazar

Such a poor decision. Are you guys sure you know how your user base is currently using your solutions and tools? Because, judging only from the backlash of this update, this seems to be a little be on the “miss” side. Before rolling out such a pivotal update to the main experience it would have been a good idea to do some beta testing first. In other words… deleting this feature was a poor choice over all.

Makes me question FIGMA altogether……. why not just leave it.  “You’ll get used to it” is an unacceptable response.

Christopher_Gibson

Absolutely wild to suggest that removing an option makes anything easier for the users. If I found grid view easier to use before I would have been using it. Obviously everyone who was using the list view found the list view easier to use.

The only thing this change actually makes easier is their development of the code, since they don’t have to maintain two views now. Presenting that like it’s a benefit for the users is absolutely disingenuous.

Whoever they finally hire for the Director of UX job listing that’s been on LinkedIn for months should make poor decisions like this a priority. The idea that “the Grid View makes it easier to scan and find files quickly.” most certainly wasn’t surfaced by a designer. Maybe penpot is worth checking out...

To say that it was an unpleasant surprise this morning to find everything splayed out in a thumbnail gallery with truncated file names would be a tremendous understatement.

I can't tell if I'm more baffled or appalled (a bit of both?) to see the rationale and response that this reduction in/removal of functionality is some sort of objective quality of life improvement that will simply take time to get used to.

No matter what spin is applied, removing this option makes no sense, and it will absolutely have a negative impact on my workflow as long as it's no longer available.

Nick Join EBY

What were you guys thinking? Worst decision you’ve made. Finding what I need takes 10 times longer now.

whereintheworldisdave

I don’t understand how they think this enhances the experience. Please give us the option to have the List view back.
