Question

❓ Is it currently impossible to sell a Figma plugin—yes or no?

Hartaki

Hi all (and hopefully someone from the Figma team),

I’m writing this post after spending days trying to figure out whether it is currently possible to sell a Figma plugin, and I’m honestly shocked at how contradictory, confusing, and out-of-date the information is across the official documentation and forum posts—even posts by Figma staff. I’m not alone in this confusion.

Let me lay out what I’ve found and where the contradictions lie.

🔒 1. Official documentation (as of now) says the Community Seller program is closed

From the official documentation on selling Community resources:

“Note: We are not approving new creators to sell paid files on Community at this time.”

This implies that unless you were already approved long ago, you can’t use the built-in Stripe-based seller infrastructure at all—meaning you cannot charge for your plugin through Figma in any official way.

🌐 2. A 3-year-old post from Figma staff says you can use your own Stripe flow (but not in the plugin UI)

Source: Forum post from 2022

Here, a Figma team member responded:

“Yes, you can charge for your plugin using an external flow (such as Stripe), as long as you don’t put the payment form inside the plugin’s UI. You must redirect the user to an external page.”

Okay, that made sense at the time. Many developers built plugins with off-platform payments (via Stripe, Lemon Squeezy, etc.) and implemented license key validation.

😕 3. Then came a 2-year-old post suggesting you must publish two versions of your plugin?!

Source: Forum post from 2023

This user was told (allegedly by Figma support):

“One version must have pricing configured in Figma and may not include any prompts to purchase on a different platform.
Another version may include links to purchase the resource off-platform.”

This is... incredibly confusing. What does "pricing configured in Figma" mean, if you’re not approved for the Seller program? And why must a separate version be published just to include an external purchase link?

If Figma is not approving sellers, how could someone even publish a version with pricing configured?

🚨 4. And finally the most alarming post: Stripe onboarding won’t work unless you’re already approved

Source: Post from May 2025

A developer tries to launch their plugin and receives a reply from Figma support (Junko3):

"It appears you're not yet an approved seller at the moment. As mentioned in our documentation, only users who have been approved to sell resources on the Community can activate a Stripe account."

"Unfortunately, we're not currently approving new creators to sell paid resources on the Community."

This implies that even if you're trying to use Figma's own native Stripe integration, you simply cannot do so unless you’re already whitelisted.

🤯 So... is the answer just No?

Can someone from Figma please clarify the current status?

  • Is it still allowed to charge for plugin usage using an external service like Stripe or Lemon Squeezy and require license key input in the plugin?

  • If yes, are there any restrictions on mentioning external purchase links in the plugin UI or Community listing?

  • If no, and if the only allowed payment method is Figma's Stripe integration—but you’re not accepting new sellers—then does that mean it is currently impossible for new developers to monetize a Figma plugin?

For a platform that claims to support and empower plugin developers, this lack of clarity is incredibly frustrating. It seems like a complete contradiction: you encourage us to build professional, high-value plugins, yet simultaneously block any possible monetization path without clearly stating that.

I know there are many of us trying to invest time and effort into building sustainable, high-quality tools for the Figma ecosystem. Please give us a clear and updated answer.

Thanks in advance.

Hi @Hartaki

Thanks for laying out all your findings so clearly.

Regarding your question about whether it's possible to use external payment flows, our official documentation on About selling Community resources states the following under the "Do I have to sell my resources using Figma’s payment platform?" section:

You can choose to sell your resource using Figma's payment platform or a third-party payment site.

To address your follow-up question about restrictions, I'm checking with our internal team to clarify if there are any specific guidelines or restrictions on mentioning external purchase links within the plugin UI or on the Community plugin page.

Thanks,

Hi there,

Our team has confirmed that you are able to monetize your plugins or widgets using third-party payment pages. Feel free to include those links within your plugin's UI and on its Community page description.

Thanks,
