Support OKLab and OKLCH

owilliams

These are new and improved color formats that replace hex and rgb. They will soon become the standard in web browsers. They open up more colors than are currently possible.

Oklch is increasingly becoming more popular, and being used way more in web development. Having Oklch and Oklab support in the native color picker would be great, even though there already is a “OkColor” plugin, because I’d like to use Oklch inside variables, gradients, etc.

Hey there, thanks for sharing your feedback on Figma’s color picker!
FYI, I’ve updated your topic’s title and added some tags to make it clearer.

I've previously made this suggestion two years ago.

OKLCH is becoming increasingly common. e.g. Tailwind, a wildly popular CSS library, now uses OKLCH.

OKLCH has been supported in browsers for years at this point.

Hey @Oliver_Williams, thanks for your suggestion!

I've reopened your thread since it was automatically closed after 90 days due to our previous settings. I've also merged this topic with your thread to keep all the feedback in one place. Appreciate it!

I agree with @Oliver_Williams  this is an important topic. We are focusing on accessibility and OKLCH would help us improving contrast management for our website (for example by setting rules where an hovered color has just a slight lightness adjustment, etc). The issue is for now mainly developers are pushing it, until Figma supports it it is difficult for me to tell designers to use it.

This is definitely becoming more of a “must have” than a “like to have”. Native support will be essential especially with further integration of Dev Mode and Code Connect.

Absolutely need this as a developer this is the new standard in tailwind. It’s much better to design with as well as it guarantees perceptual uniformity across hues. Figma needs to support this sooner than later. It’s causing a translation nightmare in development processes.
