Running a prototype changes font weight!

When I design a presentation on Figma (as a prototype), I add the correct weight for each font (Regular, Medium, Bold, Italic) - when I present it, some of the texts’ font weight revert to Regular.

Does anyone else have a similar issue? Know of any solutions so that the font weight won’t change when running a protoype? Thanks

Hey @_SD_Miguel_Prado, thank you for reaching out!

Please answer me the question below, I need further information on you issue to investigate.

Is this happening in the desktop app and in the browser?

Could you try viewing this prototype in full Present mode rather than Preview to see if this changes anything for you?

Could you confirm if you’ve installed a custom font?

Also are you seeing any missing font warnings?

Are you using variables for your prototype?

Are you able to share a screen recording and if possible your file with me? Please invite support-share@figma.com with “can edit” permission so I can look into this further. Note that users with @figma.com emails on your team do not count towards your billing.

Thanks in advance!

Hi @Gayani_S, thank you for your reply!

This has only happened to me on desktop, not browser.

I can confirm this issue appears when in Present mode.

It is indeed an installed custom font, though I have made sure to have all the variations properly downloaded. (No font warnings)

Though I am using components on this prototype, the issue appears on specific texts outside the components.

Sadly, I cannot share the file, since it’s work-related (confidential).

Best

Hey! Could you please check if the same issue happens when you use one of the Google fonts in Figma rather than your custom fonts?
I’ve just created a support ticket on your behalf. Your ticket number is #1024342, for reference.
Please download Figma desktop app debug logs and share it with the support team.
Support should be in touch with you soon.
Our support team usually takes up to 24 hours to reply back to emails - tends to be quicker than that in normal circumstances. However, please be aware that we are facing increased contact volume so there might be a delay.

Let me know if there is anything else I can assist with.

Thanks,
Gayani

Hey there, I am encountering the same issue. Is there an update on this?

Hey @Xinyue_Guo, thanks for reaching out! I understand how frustrating this issue must be, especially when it’s impacting your prototypes.

I checked the previous support ticket, but unfortunately, the other user didn’t follow up, so we’re still missing some information. To help get a clearer picture of what’s happening on your end, could you please share a bit more info?

  • Is this happening in both the desktop app and the browser?
  • Have you tried clearing your cache? Here are the steps for the desktop app: Clearing Cache Instructions.
  • Could you try viewing the prototype in full Present mode (instead of Preview) to see if that changes anything?
  • Have you installed any custom fonts, and are you seeing any missing font warnings?
  • Are you using variables for your prototype?

If possible, it would be really helpful if you could share a screen recording of the issue as well.

I have this issue too.

  • Happening in both desktop and browser
  • In full present mode
  • I’m using custom fonts (but have been for years and never had this issue). No missing fonts warnings.
  • It is occurring more reliably on the strings where I am pulling in text variables. But it also sometimes happens on strings where I am not.
  • I quit Figma, and reopened it, and that solved the issue of the non-variable strings, but it’s still happening to the variable ones. As soon as I then scroll horizontally on the component with the non-variable strings, they then swap to bold.
  • I cleared the cache as per the instructions, and it’s still happening

It could have something to do with scrollable areas. The variable strings which I consistently see the issue on are hidden within a scrollable area and I have to scroll to reveal them. I moved them up the page so they were visible. They were then not bold, and became bold on scroll.

I was using design system styles, and bold variable on the text. But when I detach those, it still occurs.

I hope this info helps.

Update: I’ve found completely detaching the string from font style variables solves it. (So not only the weight, but the family)

This has been an incredibly annoying workaround in order to get my prototype to look right. I really hope this is resolved quickly.

Hey @Lisa_Morellini, thanks for sharing these detailed steps and for working through the troubleshooting—sounds like it’s been a frustrating process.

I’m glad you found a workaround, though I can see how inconvenient it must be to detach styles just to get your prototype looking right. I’ve gone ahead and created a support ticket (#1160071) for you so our team can investigate this further and look for a more permanent fix.

Our team usually replies within 24 hours, but response times might be a bit longer than usual due to high volume.

I appreciate your patience, and we’ll do our best to get this resolved quickly!

I have this issue too.

  • Happening in both desktop app and browser in prototype mode
  • I’m using custom fonts (but have been for years and never had this issue). No missing fonts warnings.
  • I’ve quit Figma, and reopened it, and that solves nothing. As soon as I open the layout in Prototype mode, both bold and regular fonts change to italic
  • I cleared the cache as per the instructions, and it’s still happening

What bothers me most is:
even the smartest prototypes, components, layouts and flows are completely ignored if and when the public’s attention is only focused on the fact that everything is in italics.

And the poor designer seems worryingly incompetent in the eyes of his audience
even though the reason for all italics is the software.

I’d prefer to not have an individual support ticket for this, as it appears to be a common bug. I would just like to know when it is resolved.

Hi @Janne_Tammensalo,

Thank you for providing these detailed insights— I completely understand how frustrating it must be to have your design vision compromised by unexpected font changes.

I’ve created a support ticket for you, #1163542, so our team can investigate what might be causing this issue.
Typically, our support team replies within 24 hours, though there may be a slight delay due to increased contact volume right now. We’ll do everything we can to get this resolved quickly.

Thank you for your patience!

Hi @Lisa_Morellini, thank you for sharing your thoughts—I completely understand preferring not to open individual support tickets when an issue seems widespread. However, to help our team confirm the specifics of this bug and work toward a resolution, they do need additional details from you. I checked your ticket (#1160071), and it appears they’re awaiting some follow-up information to dig deeper into this issue.

While we recognize this may be affecting multiple users, your insights could really help the team pinpoint the cause more effectively. If you’re able to provide the requested details, it’ll be a big step toward resolving this for everyone experiencing it.

Thank you again for your patience and cooperation as we work through this!
