I happily created a variables collection for my existing dark mode and light mode color style palettes that I had in my Design System.

The thing is, my app is primarily designed in dark mode, but I created the light mode variables first and now I’m stuck with having light mode as the default which is very frustrating. My only option seem to be do just delete and redo the ‘light mode mode’ which I’m not that keen on doing.

I wish it was possible to just change the order of my color variable mode columns horizontally using drag and drop, just like how you change order of variant properties vertically.

Often when defining the various breakpoints in variables using modes, it would be great to be able to reorder the columns. Currently, once you set a mode column it is impossible to reorder it and this is not ideal.

👇 Currently these are set and cannot be draggable like rows.

Hi @Johan_Holst,

I built a plugin to save & reuse variables between your Figma files and it could help you to reorder the modes too

Waiting for Figma to build it natively, it might already help you

Here is the small tutorial and the youtube link (if you need subtitles or video below does not work)

Hey there Robert. This Idea is great. However, there are other posts about this feature that have more votes, which I will attach at the end of my reply. Please check them out and vote for the one with the most votes. (If you close this post, this might be even better, The chance of dividing votes between multiple posts will get lower.

Hey there Johan.

This post is relevant to what you have offered. But this one has more votes. I suggest reposting your idea in the other thread and closing this one. Hope they add this feature ASAP.

We need this

Hi! There’s a new plugin that’s specifically for reordering modes, its called Reorder Variable Modes. You can drag’n drop them in the order you want, specially useful for setting a default mode (first column) after you’ve created several others.

If you don’t mind threads could be merged @moderators

I work with a system of brands (modes) which I have organised in alphabetical order. I can only create a new mode which adds it to the far right of the table. I need to now add more modes which will need to adhere to this alphabetical order, but there is currently no way (or that is visible) to re-order these modes. Clicking and dragging a column in the table order or being able to re-order them (in the same way we can order properties within a component would be extremely useful and actually necessary).

Hiya @Jim_Knox - thanks so much for taking time to provide this! I just submitted your feedback/request over to our engineering team. I will do my best to reach out when I’ve gotten an update.

Request can be merged with Make it possible to move Variable Mode Columns - #7 by David_Knowles

Thank you very much for the long-awaited update on Variables – finally! However, some basic table functionality is still missing. I would like to better manage columns in variable data tables:

  • Add a column at a specific location

  • Delete a column

  • Rearrange column order

Thanks,

Chris

Would it be dramatic to say that I am horrified this isn’t currently possible? It seems like incredibly obvious functionality.
