Half baked idea: Layout grid styling should be a personal preference

What if there was a global setting for layout grid styling (color and opacity), that worked at the personal level, similar to nudge amount?

It’s a half baked idea 🙂

What I’m reacting to is, sometimes my collaborators prefer a stronger grid style than I do (more saturated color, higher opacity), whereas I prefer a nearly-invisible grid. Everyone has different grid preferences, yet grid styling is a shared property.

There are lots of personal settings in the View menu and Preferences menu. Global layout grid visibility (View > show/hide layout grids) is a personal setting, while layout grid styling is not… but could it be?

I’ve always liked the fact that settings like nudge amount and snap to geometry are personal preferences. Figma files are naturally collaborative, and these personal settings create room for more individualized workflows.

It complicates the matter that grid styling is frame-specific… but still, food for thought!

This is an interesting idea. Layout grids are primarily a visual aid, and different designers often have different preferences for colors, opacity, and visibility settings. Making grid styling a personal preference rather than a file-level setting could improve collaboration by allowing each team member to customize their workspace without affecting others. It would help maintain consistency in shared files while giving individuals more control over their design environment. Has the team considered a per-user view setting similar to how other interface preferences are handled?

This Chipotle menu with prices guide is genuinely useful for anyone planning their next meal. I like how clearly everything is explained, from burritos and bowls to sides and drinks. The pricing details make it easy to compare options and stay within budget. It would be even better if you added some recommendations for first-time customers or popular combinations. Overall, the structure is clean and easy to follow, which makes browsing the menu much more convenient. Great effort in keeping the information simple and organized without overwhelming the reader.
