Consider the following scenario:

  • My team needs to have a reusable template with a predefined layer structure so we don’t have to recreate the same file structure over and over and to keep our files consistent enough that designers, PMs and engineers know what to expect of our files regardless of the designer that worked on it.

  • We currently use a file the team manually duplicates by doing right click>duplicate and then move to the project they will be working on, but instead of this, we would prefer to just click on create new file and select a template from the dialog that figma provides. The problem we have is that you need to publish that file to the entire Figma community to be able to do this and the security policy of our company doesn’t allow this.

Should templates be public to the community by default? Can’t we just create a new template and make it available to our internal team only?

I just built a whole starter kit for designers thinking I would just save it as a template now that I’m done – and kind of shocked it doesn’t exist. I found this thread as I was hunting to figure out how to do it 🙂

Everything from Word, Sketch, XD, etc., relies on templates to make it easy to start everyone from a consistent base. This should certainly be a table stakes feature.

This is exactly what I thought I’d get from signing up for “organization”. Super bummed I upgraded. I don’t see any real benefit now. Hope they add this functionality soon.

Yes, I would like to have this feature as well. I have made a file that we use as template. And I have favorite this file, so it’s shown in the left navigation. But now the design team is growing. It’s been overseen by new people. I think a default template that could be chosen when you create a new file will help in the keep the quality in our standardization.

have a very similar use case! thanks for bringing this up. Just spent 20 mins in admin logs to track down a missing design file template… it was accidentally moved and then overwritten. Not too hard to backtrack and re-create for what I’m doing, but still a bit frustrating +1

This is very much the situation I’m in right now as well. I’m testing Figma (FigJam actually) to see if it has the features we need. Not having templates is a huge problem, since we depend on them heavily in other similar software.

+1. This feature would help my team so much… it’s about time.

Would be good to have possibility of adding a few templates for the team to choose from when creating a new file on their projects.

I just saw that Sketch (Oh yes, I said it) has templates now 😶‍🌫️

Was just about to submit the same idea.

I’d like to create a proper template for my new drafts so I don’t have to create X number of pages like Cover/Personas/Problem Statement/Etc.

Upvoting!! We have a specific file we use as our starting point for all projects in Figma, that includes page organization and categorization and standard thumbnail templates. It would be ideal to make this a standard option next to “new design file” in Figma.

Just here to lurk on progress. No? Maybe?

Hi 🙂 Any word on this? Would be a huge help on the DesignOps side.

We really need this!!!

Would really love this. Figma has a lot of features that are ideal for making templates… except the ability to create a template.

I just recently ran into this problem. I had to create 8 teams in Figma (all with same structure) and found the process to be very time intensive. Instead of copy and paste, I had to rebuild and copy the same structure 8 times and then double check all of my work.

I know duplicate is not a buzzy worthy feature, but it did negatively impact my perception of the tool. I dread ever having to setup another project team in the future and truly hope the functionality to simplify the process is built into the roadmap before I have to do it again.

From a designOps perspective, it makes it increasingly harder to create a consistent setup when the process is manual.

We love this feature in FIgJam - make it a reality in Figma too!

This would be a amazing way to make our files consistent across our organisation! Can you pleaseeee make it a reality? 🥺

We need this feature too! Please add Figma.

Hello, was this feature added?

I figured out a work around by duplicating a template file, without manually forgetting to duplicate and accidentally working in them.

You can duplicate a file and start a new file from inside a web browser (Chrome, Safari, Edge, etc…).

Do this:

Step 1 - Make the duplication link

1 - Copy the link of the file you will want to use as a template and update it to add “/duplicate” after the filename

EXAMPLE: I COPIED THIS link from Figma- https://www.figma.com/file/3fY9XMu6XfWZOgPrMlFNMx/FILENAME-OF-EXAMPLE-FILE**TEMPLATE?type=design&t=wmxDp0krslea7ffi-6

2. Edit the link so that everything after the filename gets chopped off (starting with the “?type=”) and then replaced with “/duplicate”

EXAMPLE: https://www.figma.com/file/3fY9XMu6XfWZOgPrMlFNMx/FILENAME-OF-EXAMPLE-FILE**TEMPLATE/duplicate

3. Try the edited link in the browser. It should make a duplicate copy within that Figma folder. Once good, anytime this link is used in the browser it will duplicate the file… so this link is reusable!

4. Share the link with the team

Step 2 - Using the link

1 - copy and paste your file link into your browser of choice

EXAMPLE: https://www.figma.com/file/3fY9XMu6XfWZOgPrMlFNMx/FILENAME-OF-FILE**TEMPLATE/duplicate

2 - Rename the new opened file to one of your choosing

3 - Move your new file from Team Ops to where you want it to live

Outcome: This ensures the template file does not get accidentally edited, and allows the team to quickly start new Figma Design Files:D

Any news on something like this without the hacky workarounds? My team have a predefined set of page structures and even starter elements that I would love to make available via some kind of Team Templates etc.

Please let it happen, as its a pain manually doing all of this.

We really need this as well. @Figma_Moderation could you share status on when this might happen?

Our design team has a standard file structure and we’d love to set a template (or two) globally that can be used for every new file.

Same here,

It’s a real pain to have a Template project with a template file that we need to duplicate and move to to the right project. If we had the possibility to select a template when clicking on the “new file” button it would save much time.

I came here to know if there is any update, “create new> from template”

Thank you!!!

Glad there’s a thread for this already–would love to see the templates (org-wide) feature in Figma, just the way it exists for FigJam!
