The Problem:

Collaborating with stakeholders often requires many content updates & iterations (text, image, etc). I think most content writers/stakeholders could easily make these updates but would require editor access, giving them unneeded (& often unwanted) edit permissions.

Suggested Solution:

Provide a Content Editor role in Figma that allows a user to:

  • Update text layers

  • Update image fills

  • Anything else?

Additional features could include:

  • Editor can lock/unlock editability of content per layer

  • Ability to suggest/accept changes (similar to google docs?)

  • Assign content to users for editing?

Any other ideas on how this role could work?

I like this idea. It’s particularly low impact much like a viewer. Could offer the same kind of role to PMs depending on your corporate structure and available resourcing. They aren’t needing to wholesale change layouts, just update and confirm content.

Alternatively, they could need more comprehensive access and thus should just be an editor (for example: setting up external APIs for Google Sheets or JSON-based content or pulling from live databases).

Yup, the content editorial role is essential for beginner/stakeholder users. Plus, I have to let them know that they have to click enter keypad multiple times to get to the nested text inside the auto layouts which confuses them.

I also have to tell them that they can hold CTRL and click on the text to edit it, but sometimes the move objects by accident because the edit role gives you the full capability to move and edit everything.

Text/content editorial role would be really helpful.

Thank you 😃

I think this would really work great now that auto layout is pretty fleshed out.

A mode where only text and image fills are editable would be very useful for working with non Figma natives 🙂

+10000000 — thinking aloud, Figma could monetize this by charging a nominal ‘content editor’ fee, maybe $3-5/month

In practice — this feature could be/likely is accomplished by people using personal accounts and duplicating files (i.e. Figma is not getting any money for this effort).

Hello 👋

I work in a large company with a lot of people in figma files, and the problem is there are a lot of people (non-designers) who have only-view profile but they can’t edit text in files to submit the correct wording of our design.

So I imagine a new permission for those people to allow edit text only and also join an audio conversation to share their feedback.

I know is it possible with figjam but there isn’t link each other between figma frame and figjam frame.

Hi,

I m facing the same issue at my company, some times the PM/PO/Content Editor/Vendor only need to edit the file in a very period, but we wont pay them for the fee of extra editor seat under ORG annual plan.

i think it would be great that Figma can provide the 1day pass/credits for them.

Yes please! I’m a UX Writer and the designers don’t want me to mess up their work. I have to write yellow notes above each screen and it’s cumbersome for micro copy. I just want to be able to edit text fields directly. It would save a lot of time. PLEASE

Is there any update on this request?

Our aim is to have all content stakeholders working in Figma as a single project source and reference point. We need our copy editors to only have access to copy layers so they can’t inadvertently alter any image or layout properties.

To have this feature would be a real boost for workflow and simplicity, as currently our project copy is entered into a 3rd party wireframe app.

Found a solution for this

I came across this idea while searching for a solution for this problem, and, though this is a Share an idea type of topic, I figure others like me would benefit from this.

There is this tool called Ditto which is made for managing copywriting. One of their solution is a plugin for figma that extracts text from frames you choose, let you or anyone in your team edit in their webapp or directly in the figma plugin, and syncs it with the design file. I am about to try it, but it sounds perfect to me.

Just like figma, their pricing plans include a free subscription with limited team members.

For those who would like to try, it can be found at www.dittowords.com

Great Idea! That would help us a lot! But I’m a bit worried about the following: Instead of adjusting the text in around 20 screens there should be an easy option to “override” the text in the parent component without explaining our co workers where to find the components. There should be an option to “Change Master Text” or “Change Text at this specific artboard” - The new Text Component Property seems a good place to integrate such a feature - even for editors 😃

We give copywriters access to edit files and get charged for a full edit seat. They may only change a word here and there as it is just a final pass before code. It would be great if they could have access to just change copy but not shift anything else around.

If it was free for them that would be amazing or it could be charged at half price etc.

Love the idea ❤️

This would be really useful of course for copy-writter but also for PM/PO, so they can add specs/user stories directly in the design files next to some features for example.

Dev would only have to open one app to find design/copy & specifications.

A must!

Thanks for pointing this out! Great to hear I’m not the only one facing this problem.

I’m Product Owner in my organization and while working on a new application in Figma, I’m really missing the possibility to add text/ notes to the mockups describing what exactly should be done in this particular screen/ view. Frequently, the logic behind a button or feature needs explanation, and providing it in comments is chaotic and difficult to follow - especially when also my Developers and Technical Writers use them.

We are forced to use external tools to add notes and constantly switch between platforms, which obviously, isn’t too effective.

I don’t mind paying for my license in Figma, but I don’t want to have the standard edit permission - just to be sure I won’t mess up the mockup made by the designer.

Would you kindly consider adding this feature to your backlog? 🙏

I saw the new developer features today and it would be amazing to have such a thing on the content side. We know our editors would like to write copy in relation to the design, but we currently miss an editorial process + less intimidation UI for copywriters and content designers. So selecting frames ready for text editing, with viewing changes and setting text to suggestion/edit. As well as the ability to see who’s done what edit. Ditto features would be great to embed.

Like this idea! Would also be good if they could copy and paste whole frames, so that they can make iterations and test out different copy.

Hey All, thanks for the feedback!

We’ll pass onto our team for consideration.

What is the latest update on this functionality? It is highly needed in our organization as it could result in a more fluent workflow and much more productive collaboration between copywriters and designers.

I thinks it’s needed too. We have an organizations account, we and the product handles most of the time the content and they don’t need to get a full editor privileges, We did that for some time to have an editor account for the product team but the CFO was about to kill me 😂.

Guys, what is the update on this? I love the ability to create slide presentations in Figma, which is a nice way to create my UX deliverables. However, my team and I still need the Content editor role functionality. Can we get a sneak peek of whether it is already in the development process or not?

Adding a post so this thread doesn’t die. Definitely need the editor role.

Came here to say the exact same thing. This is basically Adobe InCopy for Figma and it would be incredibly helpful to offer to colleagues who are hot professional designers or comfortable with using full Figma.

An update would be excellent.

This is such an important functionality that I feel is sorely missing. It’s much easier to improve copy when you can instantly visualize it. Adding comments is just not the same. At the same time, I don’t want to mess up the mockup.

I see this idea was first suggested 3.5 years ago, and people keep asking for it. Maybe I’m wrong but it doesn’t seem like this feature should be terribly difficult to develop.
