Hi! Me again - I’d like bring up a point: as someone who uses a TON of variables within design the idea that paying per variable mode is also useless - my team would end up paying the same amount for enterprise, consider this:
When building a dropdown you have multiple states:
Default
Hover
Active
Focused
Filled
Disabled
Error
Success
Warning
Filled disabled
Filled error
(I’m sure there are more)
This along would require over 11 modes just to cover this, so there isn’t a million collections to account for different states.
So if Figma said “pay $5 per mode” this WOULD NOT work and that would already bring a plan back up to $60. Huge jump and unaffordable for small scale teams.
At config they said they really want to focus on that experience. Well small teams also need a usable product that is just as built out as a large team. So 40 variable modes minimum on all plans feels appropriate. Idc about dev mode.
@dvaliao
Hey everyone, great news!
I created a plugin that allows you (sort of) to have infinite number of modes on any plan. Sure, it’s still a workaround that works by combining multiple collections together to create one with more modes, but the native experience is replicated as much as possible and also the inconveniences that come along with such solution (like managing variables across connected collections) are mostly taken care of. I think it’s the best solution we’ve got for now. Give it a shot, and let me know what you think.

If you find a bug, don’t be harsh on me, I’ll try to fix it ASAP 🙂
It sounds like you probably participated in a conjoint analysis study.
It’s unlikely that any of the specific combinations you were presented with actually represented anyone’s idea of what a good pricing/bundling options would look like.
Rather, I expect that you simply saw one of hundreds of different randomly/dynamically generated assortments, through which they’re gathering a wide swathe of data across the multiplicity of potential relationships between a bunch of different product attributes. Your responses, combined with hundreds of others, will then be crunched together to help statistically identify which levers (and combinations of levers) might be most profitable for them to pull in order to maximize customers’ willingness to pay.
As such, you shouldn‘t take the “utter chaos” you were shown too seriously, or as indicative of Figma’s actual current strategy (or lack thereof).
Here is a plugin that leverages multiple collections to give you infinite modes, but it’s trying to simulate the native experience as much as possible. Give it a shot https://www.figma.com/community/plugin/1404783727338541788/infinite-modes
There are so many valid points made here. The variable mode limitation jump in subscription tiers simply doesn’t serve the Figma community. We go from a limit of 4 variable modes to… still 4… to 40? That’s a weird strategy: non-jump to massive jump. Why not give us an in-between number like 20 for the Organization tier? It would increase the value of upgrading.
Please sir, may I have more modes :cries in needing just 2 more modes:
Hi! Me again - just hoping we could get 40 modes on all plans. That would be incredible. Keeping small business’ in mind is imperative and handing off to clients as well. So please 40 modes for ALL. I’m literally begging at this point.
Still a bit strange that this (lively) topic is completely ignored by Figma… (copied but it gets the point)
I made a new Figma plugin called Token Swapper. This plugin enables unlimited “Modes”/Themes, given you organize your themes using top-level folders/groups.
You can find the plugin here: https://www.figma.com/community/plugin/1413574934305847457/token-swapper
Token Swapper is currently in Beta. Let me know if this helps!
Any update on this. I want to push my company to invest in Organization level, but right now having the same amount of modes limits the value.
I can not stress enough how more modes should not be gate kept based on plans - ESPECIALLY for small business (one person studios) who want to hand off to other (one person studios) that literally cannot afford a more expensive plan, nor do they need it.
PLEASE MAKE MORE MODES FOR ALL!!!
@dvaliao @Celine_Figma @Gayani_S @Junko3 @y_toku
Figma = Webflow with the greediness.
I totally agree! Why not limit the number of text fields or images or grids or autolayouts as well?.. I hope the CEO never reads this comment.
keeping this alive! PLEASSE
It’s crazy to see that, compared to Figma, all apps from Adobe combined are a bargain.
We as a community would at least like to have a statement from Figma on this matter. @ksn
So, it is now end of September and the last time anyone from Figma piped in regarding this topic of capped modes was in June of last year. I certainly expect responsiveness from “community support” staff than a single comment on over 14 months 😕
We’ll never let this thread die…it defies belief that you still haven’t properly addressed this.
As a team lead in a smaller company it just dawned on me that it would require a huge bump up in pay to be able to have more than FOUR variable sets, when it’s limitless in development.
I then hoped I would be able to at least just change my seat to enterprise and increase my subscription with roughly 60 euros/mo, but that’s not doable either since you have to fill x amount of seats for enterprise as well.
Figma, this is unbelieveable. There’s no reasonable explanation for why it’s not available to professionals.
Thanks for the heads up! You just saved me a lot of time, I would’ve wasted on finding a solution with Figma.
This is such a frustrating move from Figma.
Post having watched the release notes: PLEASE I AM BEGGING FOR MORE MODES - PLEASE FOR ALL its so unattainable to ask a team of 2 to pay $75/month for more modes … what if the client that we are handing off to doesn’t have an enterprise plan and need to update something? This is just so upsetting
The most frustrated thing is that it is not even $75. I contacted them to upgrade to enterprise for our 3 accounts and I was told that the enterprise upgrade is only possible with a minimum contract value of 5.000 EUR.
I think it’s time for some of us developers to create an open source “Figma Alternative”, these things happen when one go-to tool suddenly decides to be a jerk and doesn’t listen to their customers.
still keeping this bad boy alive I NEEED IT
The Figma team is still silent… I was looking at pricing last night, and there are still 4, 4, and 40 variables in purchase options…
I wonder what will happen when competition shows up (and it always shows up).
