Question

"This is an unassigned draft file" Error in Figma Desktop App

Andira Shadrina Kirana

I was cleaning up unused files in my Figma desktop app by leaving teams/projects that were no longer active. After removing these teams, when I tried reopening one of my personal files, I got a pop-up saying:
"This is an unassigned draft file"
Now it's telling me to 'ask any admin' - but I'm confused because I never shared this file with anyone! It's my personal file, so why would I need admin permission to access my own work?"

Hi @Andira Shadrina Kirana,

I understand that after you leave teams or projects, you're seeing the "This is an unassigned draft file" message when you try to access a file.

This message likely indicates that the file is in the Drafts space of a team you've already left. Please note that when you leave a team, you'll no longer have access to any files, projects, or libraries within that team.

When a user is removed from a team, their drafts are automatically assigned to the "Unassigned Drafts" folder. These files can only be managed by an admin. As such, could you please reach out to your team admin? They will be able to follow the instructions outlined in the article on how to Manage drafts of removed users

Hopefully, that clarifies things! Thanks,

djv

Hi @Andira Shadrina Kirana,

I sent you a private message last week, so I’m just checking in to see if you're still running into that error when reopening the file.

We're in touch with the product team, and they’d love to take a closer look. When you have a moment, please fill out this secure form to help us investigate further. Be sure to:

  • include a link to this Forum thread for context
  • share the link to the file where the issue is happening (or the file name if you can’t access it)
  • attach a screenshot of the error message, if available.

We really appreciate you flagging this, and we’ll make sure it gets routed to the right folks to get things sorted out. Let us know how things are going!
