I cannot for the life of me figure out how to export just the raw photo asset … the designs are utilizing masks and groups, but there is no clear way to export just the photo itself unless I heavily modify the layers and move the photo to a place outside of the mask/group/layer

Thank you for reaching out. You’re right; Figma doesn’t have a built-in feature for exporting raw images from complex designs. But, I’ve done some looking around in the Figma Community, and I found some plugins that might be just what you need.
One popular plugin that caught my eye can be found here: https://www.figma.com/community/plugin/973190386632562805. The Figma Community has quite a range of plugins, so there’s a good chance you’ll find one that works for you.
