Building a Date-Range Picker Using Variables

I’m trying to build a prototype for a standard date-range picker for a travel app and thought I could do this with variables, but I keep hitting roadblocks.

Has anyone had any luck with this kind of thing?

To be clear, this isn’t just a single date picker, I want to choose the first date, and then the last date and highlight every date in between the two automatically.
