The option key functionality stopped working

Holding down the “option” key is not allowing me to measure the distance between objects and it has nothing to do with layers or groups. It just stopped working altogether and I’m not sure why.

Hey,
I started writing a whole long reply…

Whilst checking on chrome about the issue I realised I hadn’t tested my option key outside of Figma I just assumed it worked, it didn’t work, sorry I should have checked it, I realised I just never really use the key.

I use a bluetooth mechanical keyboard for both my work mac and home PC, so to figure out if it was my keyboard, I tested on the magic keyboard and option worked fine.
I also realised it was both left and right option buttons not just the one button so it’s not a switch/board issue.
What key am I pressing sites were having problems recognising the options key presses so I disconnected my keyboard resetting it and then re-paired it with the mac after doing a complete reset on the mac and it got it working again.

Guessing it was an issue with my keyboards “profiles” since it has both mac and windows.
Sorry I didn’t realise it wasn’t a Figma issue earlier.

Hi @SarahTek – can you provide a bit more info?

Are you seeing this on both the web version of Figma, and the desktop app?

If you’re seeing it on the web, what browser are you using (and what version is it)?

Can you capture a screen recording of what you are seeing when you hold the option key now?

Thanks!

Same problem, at first I thought it was just the drag+option key to duplicate shortcut but realised it was just the option key in Figma when I couldn’t measure distance between elements either.
It’s like Figma doesn’t acknowledge the option key at all for example the outline stroke shortcut (option+command+o) now just acts as the open shortcut (command+o) taking me back to the Figma home page.
It worked perfectly this morning and then just stopped with nothing noticeable changing between it working and not working.

I’ve tried in app and in browser (Edge - Version 126.0.2592.87 (Official build) (arm64)).
Both are affected, I’ve also checked to make sure it wasn’t my keyboard and the mac’s accessibility keyboard also has the same issue.
I’ve also reinstalled and cleared the cache from the troubleshooting menu neither changed anything.

@Sam_Smith hmmm…first, sorry for any trouble with this.

Have you installed any new apps recently, or made any other changes lately (not necessarily software – but hardware? You mentioned that you checked that it wasn’t your keyboard, but wanted to ask just in case).

I’ve tried replicating on my end, but I get the expected shortcut behavior with anything that includes the option key. Have you tried any other browser outside of Edge? If not, can you try something like Safari as well (it does seem to travel, but covering all bases).

Can you let me know what Mac OS version you’re using as well?

Not a problem! It’s always hard to tell, and I’m glad you got it figured out. This is helpful for me too, just in case I see anyone run into anything similar 😃

I’m going to mark your answer as the solution, and close the topic. Please feel free to open a new on or PM me if you have any other questions.
