Text styles disappearing

I have text styles defined inside a library file. All my components are using these styles.

When creating the designs using the components and styles in another file I always make sure to use the text styles and if I paste text I use Shift + Cmd + V to esnure I’m pasting text without any formatting (verry annouing tho).

Recently I was just going thorugh already done designs to check something and noticed that all the text layers in some of my pages are with the correct color variable, correct size and etc but they have no text style attached to them.

Now I have to go layer by layer, copy the text, click Reset all changes (if it is a component) and paste the text. This is rediculous.

So few questions:

  1. Is there any way to make the default pasting of text be without any format?
  2. Is there any bug that caused this dettachment?
  3. Is there any way I can only reset the style of the text layer inside component instance and not the text color and etc?

My text styles from an external library seem to randomly detach themselves too, and I have no idea what causes it. Usually it’s just a few of them that detach, however. I’m pretty sure it’s a bug but it has me doubting my sanity every time I find another detached one.

Yes, exactly

Hi there,
Thanks for reaching out about this issue with text styles detaching.

These kinds of strange font issues are nearly always caused by the use of conflicting font files across your team. This means that editors on a file are using different versions of the font with slightly different sizing or spacing which then affects the file each time it is opened by someone with a different version.

Our Help Center has more information about resolving this kind of issue: Manage conflicting fonts

We suggest that you have all editors remove these fonts if they are locally installed and then all install the same version locally. You will then need to restart Figma to serve the correct font version. Alternatively, you can ask all team members to delete their local font versions and ask an organization admin to upload the font files as shared fonts (if you are in Org plan). You can read about that feature in our Help Center: Manage fonts in an organization
For your reference, if a local version is installed, Figma will prioritize this version over the organization font and that may trigger the conflicting font issue again.

After installing the font files, if this is affecting component appearance you can launch quick commands (cmd /) then use the ‘Regenerate all instances’ tool to refresh all of your instances at the same time.

(Unfortunately, at this time once text styles are detached, our team does not have any tools to automatically reattach the styles.
If possible, we suggest restoring a previous version of the file before the styles detached or reattaching the styles by using other quick commands such as “select all with same text properties”. We understand reattaching styles requires a large amount of manual effort and appreciate your understanding.)

Additionally, if your text styles do detach again unexpectedly. Please let us know by reaching out directly to the support team: here

This will help us to investigate further. In the form, please also add support-share@figma.com as an Editor to the file and the file’s containing the text styles (this won’t affect your billing at all) to take a closer look. Thank you!

This is also an issue we face in our Design System components. This is still an issue in at the end of July 2024, still a bug.

It is not a font issue for us because only 1 font is used by the entire organization (Roboto) which is a well supported font. The style randomly disappears from instances of a component, where the component text styles are as expected.

For example, a badge component has a text style that declares the font, weight, line-height, size, etc -and randomly using the badge component, the text style disappears within the instance without a specific pattern. Some keep it, some it’s broken. It’s such a small, uncomplicated component to randomly lose its text styles is a frustrating, strange experience.

Other text styles are also displaying this behavior

  • so the text style is still in Figma, but it’s broken anywhere it’s used. This is also happening with the color styles.

It is random. Some team members will see the styles and colors, others can’t. Republishing the files and libraries has not eliminated the issue.

The response internally is to shrug and say it’s a bug in Figma.
I’d like to move past the shrug stage and get a RCA so it can be resolved.

So, is this still a bug in Figma with all the other updates going on now post Config’24? Is there an expectation this won’t be an issue soon?
thanks

our team is still facing described problem. looks like the bug is still there.

Hi,
I have the same problem. I contacted the support team but had zero answer.
My file is now a mess even though I’ve been really meticolous during the design. It seems that the important issues for Figma are about the floating or not floating panels and redesigning things that worked (like the right panel) whilst we, paying customers, are spending hours and hours re-attaching text styles that should work.

A colleauge of mine expirienced this again… His whole file using components from design system library with defined text styles in each component not has everything detached and not using styles… He now has to go and manually click on every single text layer and click “Reset text style”. The main problem is this works only for components… Everything that was made in the file and used the styles has to be manually fixed…

Hi everyone, thanks for flagging this. We are not able to replicate this issue on our end at the moment, it would be great to investigate further with a copy of your file.

If the workarounds don’t help, please reach out directly to the support team for help by filling this form here.

Please use your Figma account email, include a link to the file, and add support-share@figma.com as an Editor, a quick video recording so they can take a closer look and better visualise the issue.

If you are able to, please also provide us with the links to the frames where the styles have been detached from the text. To obtain the link, you will need to right-click on the frame in question and click Copy/Paste as → Copy link to selection. Thank you!

I’ve been running into this same issue described above. It’s only been observed from one library/project at the moment. The typefaces are natively supported by Figma. The assets in the library haven’t been changed, but the file where component instances are being placed has had this problem.

I’ve submitted a support ticket as directed.

Same issue here - it is not the ‘Conflicting fonts’ someone posted as a solution - it is not that the “font cannot be found” and is marked yellow (that is a separate thing).

It’s just like the author described. I made button components with text styles. Then I use those buttons and embed them into new components (say cards) and all still works. Then I use the card components in the designs - and even if it’s in the same file (so not necessarily an external library linked) - sometimes the text styles simply unlink!

I am also careful with copy pasting text into the components - so it’s not a case of overriding the style.

I can see the original component with the text style linked. But the instances has all text styles detached (correct, but detached).

One of the replies in this thread asked to get a Figma file where this problem happens - how do I share the file? I can’t openly share a link to our company files.

Hey @Marija , sorry to hear you are also having issues with your text styles.
You can reach out to the support team by filling out this form: here

Be sure to use your Figma account email, include a link to the file, and share it with support-share@figma.com as an Editor, so we can take a closer look. Thank you!

Same here, my text style disappeared from my projects and I cant use them as I cant find them in the styles dropdown

Hey @JavierG, sorry for the trouble!

We had a service disruption this morning that may have caused this. Can you please refresh and let us know if you still have issues?
