Is there a way to set a color in preferences or something to choose what the background color is? My old files used to have a background of #E5E5E5, but now it is set to #F5F5F5. This is a problem for me as F5F5F5 is close to one of our brand colors, so I need to go and manually change it every time. Is there a way to set a preference for the background colour in design files?

Hi there,

We are a team of a few designers ~10. After 2022’s Config event, we notice a change in the canvas’s default background color.

The new values that Figma use are:

  • Light mode: #F5F5F5

  • Dark mode: #1E1E1E

Both values are very close to our background page/screen token. That makes it hard to present designs to POs, as well when we are working with a bunch of screens.

Currently, we use a workaround - every designer slightly changes the background color. That works, but now every workfile has a slightly different background color 😦 . Another downside is that when the designer uses dark mode, the canvas is not switching to the dark one.

The ideal solution for us will be if on the team level in the settings there are two fields for setting new default values for the canvas.

Yes, please!

It would be useful to have the ability to set and/or update a global project background colour. For projects with large numbers of pages it would be useful to have a global setting that could update them all at the same time.

Yes, this needs to be a thing! Been saying this for years.

I would use this. Yes.

It would be helpful for our team if we could predefine the background color on pages in Fimga files. All of our pages always have the same background color. This must therefore always be set manually and is therefore often forgotten. If you could set the default background color globally, that would be very helpful.

Additionally, it would be great if you could reference a published variable.

This topic/idea is not new and was already asked here:

I want to be able to set the background color for all of my files automatically

Would this plugin work for you?

You may explore this plugin Multi-Page Background Color.

I created this plugin myself to address a similar issue. 😎

My need was lighter page backgrounds for all pages in the file. It was tedious to copy-paster the color and apply it to every page. Doing that for multiple files in another task …!

yes, please allow us to assign a colour style or colour variable to the canvas background 🥰 so handy when testing designs

After taking a look I think there is a need for:

  • resetting the background to the default one provided by Figma (cause it react to the app’s theme mode)

  • choosing a color from the library (color style or a variable, the same how it works for Fill and Stroke)
