It would be really helpful to import pdfs as images without trying to read any of the text as this tends to mess up the formatting and so is no longer readable.
I would use the feature for going through maths exam papers when I would want to demonstrate going through the paper.
If you think this would be valuable please vote on this thread so that it gets the attention that I think it deserves.

hi @James_Goodman have you given Super PDF plugin a try? If I understood correctly this is what the plugin does, imports PDFs as images. I hope this helps, if not let me know.
