Hey folks, first of all I love the new variable function. Within the setup of spacings I want to reference my base value (“8”) and do calculations, e.g. (spacing-base)*2". This works fine and the value is calculated properly within the input to add a new variable. But I expected not that the calculation string changes to the absolute value. With this behaviour I loose the connection/ reference to my base value and the calculation is some how obsolete.

Does anybody feel the same?

Will there be an update?

Thanks

Thanks @neelts - this looks really promising.

Please Figma team, add this feature

Basically Excel/Sheets like input possibilities, that would make prototypes more lively and real.

I’d love to see a number to HEX converter (text) “HEX(red-value)” (or something like that) and the possibility to use a text variable as colour. That would be possible if variables would allow formulas as value.

+1

+1 for this for sure…

+1 for this

Co-signing yet another great and much-needed feature. Love Figma, keeps getting better—let’s keep pushing it with new features like this. 🙂

+1 for this great idea

This feels like a function that was missed, among others. Definitely need this feature…+1000000000

+1 here.

Also formula on colors would be fantastic! With this feature I’d be able to set main theme color and automatically derive all intermediate colors from it.

+1 as well. This would be a gamechanger and making base components a lot easier

+1. Yes, please. It would be awesome!

Penpot will have this feature pretty soon.

Let’s keep this one alive, even though it might be a micro-feature. It’s similar to a few other features I’ve been looking around at, so I hope it gets lumped in with those.

Praying the Figma dev team adds this soon! It seems like a small addition considering that we already have variables.

NEED THIS +1 this is extremely helpful if you are showing your designs in static mode to clients to give them an easy understanding of something you are trying to convey - I am not a prototyper nor do I plan to start, but I am a HEAVY variable user

Hey All, thanks for the feedback here!

We’ll pass this onto the team for future consideration.

I’m dealing with a token library that has values that are formulas global x 1.25 etc… This is crucial…

I can’t tell you how disappointed I was at Config this year in the lack of product updates.

Variables was such a great idea that you got 50% of the way there.

Just adding a request for this as well. Ideally also being able to add multiple other variables together.

keeping alive!!! This is definitely needed - please keep variables in mind

Need this. Need it for default font size, rem etc.

+1 as well. Would be nice

For annotating responsive mockups and demonstrating behavior, I’d like to be able to reference a variable minus 1. For example, to show the widest possible behavior of a component at the small breakpoint, I want to be able to set the width of a frame to medium - 1.

This feature is a must specially for dynamic space systems

This feature would be ideal for experimenting with modular typographic scales.

However, it’s a bit of a slippery slope (in a good way)…

  • Adding a formula engine could transform Figma into a powerful data visualisation tool.

  • If Figma then allowed designers to surface these values within the design itself, it could become a more flexible, visually-driven, spreadsheet-like tool.

With these possibilities in mind, it’s easy to imagine Figma assigning a team to prototyping these kind of far-reaching concepts to see what’s possible/desirable. This way they could introduce smaller features (as in the original post) incrementally, ensuring they don’t close off the path to these ambitious long-term goals.

This might also align with their apparent strategy of providing a suite of creative-focussed productivity tools.

This is a MUST please

I’m a plus for this feature.
