Keyboard input replaces previous character

Sadly I have to work on a Windows computer, so whenever I type a special character, it’s done with alt + 3 digits. But when I do that, the special character replaces the character that it comes after. This drives me crazy, and it’s unlikely they’ll be giving me a Mac(book) anytime soon...

While I’m not entirely sure what might be causing this, could you share a screen recording of the issue?
