Can't copy and paste images as background fill anymore

Rianne van Diemen

Since the last update, it’s impossible to copy and paste the image fill, into another component.

I’m working with Auto Layout and I used to be able to select the fill > copy this > open another component > select the fill > paste.

This doesn’t work anymore. It’s a feature I use all the time. Does anybody else experience this?

Hi everyone, quick update from our side: We’ve been in touch with the engineering team, and they’ve pushed a fix to production that should resolve this issue. ✅

💡 If you haven’t already, try giving the tab you’re working in a quick refresh → copy/paste functionality should now behave as expected.

Thanks again for your patience while we worked to get this resolved. Let us know how it goes, and if any questions remain.

Our team also uses this feature on a day-to-day basis. Our workflow has slowed down as a result of not having access to this ability anymore. Figma team please bring this back!

It still works but in a different way. Instead going into the fill panel and copy/paste, select the thumbnail by clicking anywhere near the fill preview. It will turn blue, and you’ll be able to copy or paste the image by pressing Cmd+C/V or Ctrl+C/V. That way now you can copy/paste gradients too.

Hey everyone! Thank you for flagging this, we hear you! Our team is actively looking into the issue with copying and pasting image fills. We know this is a workflow many of you rely on, and we really appreciate your patience while we investigate. I’ll keep you posted here as soon as we have an update. Thanks again for bringing this to our attention and for your continued feedback!

Have same issue 😢

Tim_Petersen

This is absolutely bricking my productivity right now. I can’t begin to describe how frustrating it is. It works like every 25 tries and doesn’t even work if I use the menu!

Just dropping a comment to say this needs to be fixed asap, one of those things you take for granted until it’s gone. Swapping images is a huge pain now.

Everyone, you still can copy and paste fill like this

Matt_Smaldone

I am having the same issue on Copy and Fill, it no longer works. We should be able to copy and paste the fills inside the Fill layer. This is constant issue with it breaking when you make any kind of update. Please fix this ASAP.

That’s not what we’re referencing. You should be able to duplicate the present fill on top of itself and that does not work.

This doesn’t work anymore. It’s a feature I use Was ist mein Aszendent? all the time. Does anybody else experience this?

Yes, others are experiencing the same issue. It's likely a bug from the recent update. You can try duplicating the component as a temporary workaround and report the issue to Figma support.

Nellya’s solution does work but it’s really finicky. You have to click in just the right spot on the right side of the “draggable” point. I can’t only get it sometimes. but if you click there and the whole fill is outlines in blue you know you got it and can copy and paste as you did before.

This is becoming increasingly frustrating and is slowing down my work. Figma please get this fixed ASAP!

This is not a solution. If you have any other styling on the div it gets over-written, so gradients, background colours etc all go.

Sept 16 2025:
I had not had this issue before, but it just started this morning for me. I have checked for updated, reloaded tabs and quit Figma, but am having no luck.

Hi @Bryon_S, thanks for letting us know this is happening!

Our team definitely pushed a fix for this in early August, so this may be a new bug.

To help our team narrow down their investigation:

  • How are you attempting to copy + paste?
  • Are you using a shortcut or right click menu?
  • What OS are you using and is this happening both in the browser and with the desktop app?
  • Was this working consistently for you before?
  • Any other issues with pasting images as a background fill previously?

With these details, I can send this over to the team to see if there were any recent regressions.
