Hi,

I’ve noticed an issue with changing the font family in the variables modal. The font does not update across all pages and components automatically. The font can be changed to the correct family when double clicking on a text box.

Cheers,
Sanny

As you can see the font styling is changed in this example (“Ag” is in a serif font)
But the text in the button is still the old.

After double clicking the textfield, the font is adjusted to the correct form.

Is this a known bug? Has anyone else experienced this issue? Are there any workarounds?

I found a solution to this problem, but it is not the desired way of working. It feels like font variables are not real variables at this moment.

You can use the command “Recompute text layout in selection” to update the text boxes. However, this requires manually running the command on every single page in your document after changing the font family variable.

For more details, refer to the discussion here: Update all text boxes with new version of font.

Also experiencing this issue.
Neither command worked for me.

Update from support is that it “sounds like the tool isn’t behaving the way we’d expect it to.” My ticket has been sent to the Technical Quality team.

Just found a workaround

  1. After a variable swap, the font family is not change ?
  2. Select the components or frames containing your components;
  3. Resize (K) and cancel the resize immediatly;
  4. The font is magically updated.

I had to take it a step further and actually resize all the frames and undo it immediately. The fonts all loaded and stayed that way after.

Is there any official update on this? I have the same issue; variables for text don’t apply or they do so in really bizarro ways (like having to click on every text container to get it to change).

Same issue here. The command lines and the resizing did not work for me. I have to manually re-apply the same text style (that was already applied) before the style is updated.

Same issue. Seems to be related to the colors also not updating in random cases. Clicking inside, changing anything, then undoing, seems to fix both issues, but dear lord is it a time suck. Please fix.

Hey everyone, thanks for flagging this and apologies for the delayed reply!
I was able to find the support ticket from SJH, and can confirm that this is a bug that our team has been investigating since June. (Typography variable applied incorrect Font Family). Unfortunately, we don’t have a timeline to provide on when to expect a fix, but we’ll pass this topic onto the team as they continue to work on it 🙏🏼

For others who encounters another issue (outside of typography variable), please reach out directly to the support team by filling out this form: https://help.figma.com/hc/en-us/requests/new?ticket_form_id=360001744374

Our support team can investigate further your specific issue. When reaching out to the team, please share a quick video recording when you encounter the issue, the URL of your affected link and please invite support-share@figma.com with "can edit" permission, so they can take a look into this and try to replicate the issue on their end. Thank you

Same here. Only way to fix is manually reapply the style to every single text layer. This renders the Modes in Variables useless. There is no way for me to test new font styles in design by taking advantage of Modes.

Hi having, the same issue here, I updated the Font Family and it’s not updating across all components.

Still seems to be an issue. :/ Anyone figured out how to get around this effectively?

Reporting the same issue. Specifically text elements within Components do not update when I change the Variable value for the font name (e.g. from SF Pro Text to Courier).

Other text elements behave as expected, and automatically update.

Following up on my comment above—moments later I am experiencing it intermittently working as expected.

I didn’t make any changes, just kept switching the value for my font name back and forth. Sometimes all of the text elements (including the ones inside of components) update as expected.

Attaching an image of how I have configured this in Variables, in case it is useful.

Having same issue, making a big change in typography family and it just won;t work - in some places has worked in some places I have to manually doing it.This needs fixing asap

Sadly lot’s of font issues with variables in Figma…
Especially when components are involved.

You don’t seem to have any timeline to share on when we can expect a fix for this bug, yet you keep releasing useless AI features that, in reality, most people barely use because they’re too busy finding workarounds or fixing the bugs you pretend not to see. These bugs are extremely impactful, and they’re what you should be focusing on first. New features can wait.

After a year, this issue still persists and this is unacceptable.

Hi everyone,

Thanks for continuing to report this, we understand how frustrating it is to still be dealing with this bug, especially when it impacts your workflow. We hear you, and I’ve escalated this again internally.

To help the team confirm what’s happening on the latest reports, we now need a file where the issue is still reproducible. The original file used for the earlier investigation is no longer accessible, so we can’t verify whether all recent cases stem from the same root cause.

If you’re still running into this, could you please share:

  • a file link where the bug occurs, and invite support-share@figma.com with “can edit” access (no charge for this),

  • (or) a minimal file that clearly reproduces the issue

  • You can DM me the link if you prefer not to share it publicly.

Once we have a reproducible example, the team can continue the investigation with the right data. Thanks again for your patience and for helping us move this forward!
