Question

Cannot publish library updates or individual component updates from design system

Rachel_Meuler

Hey there, I’m running into library publishing failure and am hoping someone can offer a solution.

Context:

  • The library is a design system file that has successfully published as recently as the afternoon fri, 2/28 (today is tue, 3/4)
The file memory usage is only 7%, and laptop has 50% available memory
  • The system contains atomic and simple molecular components with variant properties, and local variables for text and color
  • I have triple checked the entire file for conflicting component properties and/or nested instances that might cause loops – it’s possible I missed something, but the library was publishing until a few days ago
  • The last changes I made before publishing began to fail was to apply semantic color variables to icons
    • however, I had successfully published updates with those variables to other components previously, so can’t imagine this is the culprit
  • The file has 87 changes to publish, with 0 conflicting instances. Changes include modified, added, and removed components/variables

Error:

  • When I attempt to publish, assembling components goes very quickly, but the “publishing library” flag shows for a anywhere from 10 - 25 minutes until eventually the “Publishing failed. Reload page to publish” flag shows

Troubleshooting:

  • I have reloaded the file, restarted figma, logged out of and back into figma, and restarted the laptop
  • Internet connection is fine
  • I’ve tried with VPN both enabled and disabled

I’ve seen many posts about publishing errors, but haven’t found any solutions. So hoping someone here can help me 🤞🏻

Thanks figma fam!

I just started encountering this problem, too (3/18/25). Went through all the same troubleshooting things as you did, to no avail. I’ve seen some responses that are like, “I was trying to publish 100+ components, so I tried doing 10-15 at a time and it worked.” BUT, I’m only trying to publish 8 updates total, and I’m still getting this error. I’ve tried isolating each component to see if it’s a specific one, but it doesn’t matter. It still errors out.

I normally use the Figma app on my Macbook, and I saw some folks said it worked when they switched to the browser version, but that didn’t work for me either. I’ve got a brand new computer and a great internet connection, so I know it’s not a memory issue or a connection issue.

I just published an update last week (the week of 3/9) and had zero problems at all.

I am having the same issue. Can not resolve. I’ve gone back into the version history to earlier published versions and still get the same issue. So won’t publish versions that were previously published. Anyone else having any success resolving this issue?

Help! My company is having the same issue and it’s impacting a critical timeline, is there an outage happening right now or an updated resolution to fixing this issue?
