Question

Cannot Clear Update Indicator

Farmer Ted

I have a persistent issue that is driving me bonkers.  I have a design system (DS) doc that I include and use on all of our design files.  I recently updated some of the variables and re-published the document.  I then ran the update on the design file and it appeared to have updated however, one variable in particular says it still needs to be updated.  I have tried to update that single variable over and over but it never clears.  I can confirm the variable has been changed and I can use it in the design file but, as far as the system is concerned it still needs to be updated.  I have tried the following to clear it:

  • Shut down Figma and restart
  • Re-edit the variable and publish/update again
  • Clear Figma cache (desktop)

When I cleared the cache the issue was gone for a short bit of time but returned and I can’t clear it again.  I have included a screenshot of the variable in the update screen:

Please help me resolve this as it is super distracting and frustrating.

I should also note that if I select all my components created in the file and delete them, the problem goes away.  If I copy those components to another file, the problem appears in the alternate document.  I cannot identify a single component that is causing the issue though.

Same problem here and it starts around 10 hrs ago. and also figma tries to update 16 days ago state despite library was updated few minutes ago. Also if i press update, figma show message about success, and removes updates, but then again shows it.

  • Just made new variable (test in image)  in library. Figma somehow updated this new variable but still show notification about 16 days library update.
  • Re-resolve doesn’t help at all.

16 days ago update vs newly created variable

Just found a cause of the problem. This issue does’t affect library components and variables applied to them. But it affects variables applied to basic layers. But still, Figma see current library variants, as soon they applied figma show update badge for old 15 day state. When i remove variable from frame update bade disappears. Clearing cache, Relink lib, Re-resolve does’t help.

ok. I found solution:
Reresolve, Renaming collections, or variable path or adding new variable in that path does’t work.

What works:
1. in Library file, find a broken variable path that cause constant updates. for example Collection_X / Spacing /
2. Change, Add or Apply scoping. (in my case i picked content one.)
3. Wait while it will be applied to source library file. (Wait when message about unsaved changes will disappear or document stop lagging)
4. Update Library it can take a lot of time.
5. Accept Updates in other files (Show updates for all pages must be checked).

Maybe remove that extra scoping after and repeat  2-5 steps. i didnt do this yet.

@Yeazey, your solution seems to have worked for me.  Just to recap, here’s what I did to fix the issue (following @Yeazey’s instructions above):

  1. I opened up my main Design System file which contains the variable library I use in all my other files.  I didn’t know what specific “spacing” variable was causing the issue so I selected all the spacing variables, clicked edit, and unchecked one of the scope options for all the selected variables.
  2. Waited for the update dot to appear in the Design System file and then published the Design System file.
  3. After i got the success message in the Design System file, I opened the file that was having the issue, we’ll call it “Project 1”, clicked on the Assets tab and found the blue dot there saying I had updates available (not unexpected as this has been the issue I am trying to resolve), clicked the toggle to show updates for all pages, and then clicked update.
  4. I waited until the update was done, the dot went away, and appears to have stayed away now.
  5. I went back to my Design System file, this time I went through ALL my variables to make sure the scope was set correctly on all of them, then repeated steps 2 and 3.

After all of this the dot has not returned and the update process appears to be functioning as expected.  Thank you @Yeazey !

I should also note this caused me to pay closer attention to the scope feature on variables, which is a very nice feature I have been neglecting.
