Prototyping with variable modes buggy

I am also having issues with variable modes. It seems the modes work in the main source file, but when I add them as library components into another file it breaks.

Modes are broken in prototypes. I am exploring different content design in my file and even if you enforce a mode in a section, the prototype will not follow it. The problem is worse in dynamic components with hover actions.

One other thing is that you cannot change the default mode, it will always be first. It’s pretty frustrating because it broke my prototype in the middle of a user testing session.

Anything new here? I’m experiencing these issues in my prototype and we are past 1 year later!

Found this thread after finding this bug report along the same lines from 2023. Devs said they were working on it, but the issue illustrated in the OP’s example file is still alive and well in prototypes with dark mode in November 2024.

Any updates from Figma? This flickering issue really takes the wind out of our sails when trying to show prototypes to stakeholders. It’s not great to espouse the amazing new power of variable modes and then say, “okay well suspend your disbelief, it’s not supposed to flicker like that”…

It’s kind of disappointing how Figma sometimes handles community requests.
