Correct way to update related components

Hello, 👋

I’m wondering about the best way to update a change on Figma component.

The following scenario has come up for me. I have 3 components, and my icon component is used in all 3 places:

  • Component 1: Main icon pack
  • Component 2: Tabs navigation using the icon
  • Component 3: Route container component: using the tabs + icon

If I add a new icon to Component 1, in order to use it in Component 3, I have to update Component 1, Component 2, and Component 3. Is there another way to proceed?"

Thanks for your help

Hey @Aina1, thanks for reaching out!

From what you’ve described, it sounds like Component 1 is your main component, and Components 2 and 3 are instances that you’ve used elsewhere. Is that correct?

If so, any instance you create is linked to its main component. So when you make changes to the main component (Component 1), Figma will apply any changes you apply to any linked instances (Component 2 and 3).
