Sharing file with external client

I am looking to share a file publicly so that an external client and their team members can jump in and edit the design without being included in my Figma team.

They have their own Figma accounts and I don’t want to add them to my team, however the only way that seems to work is that they are added as a member with the ability to edit one file, even with “Anybody can edit” set in the sharing settings of the file.

If they are not in the team then they are presented with a warning that they need to be upgraded, am I doing something wrong here?

You can create new free Starter team, move file there and share it for everyone can edit.

This way you won’t have to add them in your first team and won’t have to pay for new extra seats if your first team is not a Starter, but a Pro.

Thanks for the response Nellya, this is a good solution however with the free page limit, if you have a complex file then it doesn’t let you edit more than 3 pages.

Surely there is a way to share files between people with Figma accounts without having to join another team, is this a sneaky way for Figma to gain more revenue in design seats?

You can add people only in one file, not in the team, but you’ll still need to pay for every new edit seat in the file
