BUG (investigating): Some keyboard commands no longer work with objects in layers panel (Chrome)

I am having the same issue. Used to have Ctrl+Shift + Enter setup through the Appl custom shortcuts of mac for Go to main component. I stopped working like a week ago I believe altogether when Figma switched me to beta. I switched out since and tried a lot of things to try to make this work again without luck. Any adviser is appreciated. Super frustrating that there is no shortcut key for such a commonly needed action to begin with.

Iā€™m having the issues as well, they started on Friday Aug 2nd and have not resolved with various resets of my system, browser, device etc.

Same here! Del not working unless I move the item/object on the canvas.
Also copy/paste image as background is not working, and moving objects inside an auto layout with arrows is not working as wellā€¦

Hey both - I split you two away from the original topic you posted on, since itā€™s an older one.

Can you let me know which UI version you are using? Are you using UI2 or UI3? If youā€™ve tried both, is it only happening on one vs. the other?

Also, just to make sure: is this still happening even with clearing your cache + cookies for Figma in Chrome?

@Chelsea_Coorts @alessandra_mineo

I use Figma in the browser, I deleted history, cookies and cache.
I found out I need to phisically select the item in the canvas to delete it, selecting it from the layer panel and hit ā€œdelā€ is not working.
To paste images as background, once was easy as I just pasted it in the ā€œbackground imageā€ panel, now I have to do right-click on the item I want the image to go and hit ā€œpaste hereā€.

I had the same issue on windows with Chrome. If I selected an element from the layers panel none of my keyboard commands work; auto layout, copy, paste, delete etc.
I opened the same page in an incognito window it worked fine.

I uninstalled the extensions I had (wisiwig & gofullpage), cleared my cache, closed and re-opened Chrome,re-installed my extensions and itā€™s working again now.

Iā€™m currently having this problem. I found a hakey way: by right clicking on the layer first then proceed with the keyboard shortcut.

Iā€™m also incredibly frustrated that I cannot add Go to Main Component (also there is case differences between the main menu in Figma and the contextual menu). Moving from Sketch and working on systems this seems like an absolute must but there is no built in, and there is no way I can add from MacOS. I guess this is where we see the breakdown of using Electron as a ā€œnativeā€ app container?

Iā€™m experiencing the same issue as already described. It started a few days ago with the delete key, and I have been forced to use the right-click menu for everything since. Itā€™s very annoying. But Iā€™m glad I found this thread to at least use some shortcuts directly on the canvas, even though itā€™s awkward.

Iā€™m also experiencing this issue and using the ā€˜right-click firstā€™ method to get around it. Iā€™m on Windows 11, Chrome 127.0.6533.100, and Figma UI2.

After resolving this issue by clearing the cache and extensions on Friday itā€™s now gone back to not working.

Iā€™ve been having this issue for quite a while now, was hoping that Figma would fix this soon because itā€™s a major issue in my workflow. For example, I canā€™t select a layer in the layers panel and delete it. I have to select the layer on the canvas instead. But itā€™s impossible to select it on the canvas when itā€™s behind other layers.

I have the same issue in Chrome on Windows. Keyboard commands work 1 time out of 15 tries

Same issue in my end while using Chrome on Windows. Friday was working fine.
In Firefox I can interact/delete objects after selecting them in the layers panel but in Firefox the select cursor is offset left by about 30 pixels so itā€™s hard to Ctrl+Click to select objects on the canvas.
Iā€™m sure thereā€™s been some work done to the UI3 interface. Clip Content is now back in the form of a checkboxā€¦ a welcoming change!
Hopefully, the issues will be fixed soon.

Thanks all ā€“ I have a bug ticket filed for this, and will update when I hear more.

Can any of you confirm if youā€™re seeing this on UI2, UI3, or both? I wasnā€™t certain from some of the responses here, and I want to be sure I get that info added to the ticket.

Appreciate your patience, everyone

EDIT: do any of you have any other apps running in the background? Something like 1Password, etc? Iā€™m wondering if thereā€™s a possibility that other apps you have are suddenly getting prioritized for those shortcuts. Iā€™m not convinced/certain thatā€™s the case, but wanted to cover that base as well.

Same problem here. Iā€™m on MacOS 14.6.1 (23G93) with Chrome 127.0.6533.100.

Keyboard shortcuts do not work unless I select an object in the canvas. I canā€™t delete anything with either backspace or delete key, copy, paste or cut. Duplicating a layer with CMD+D inexplicability tries to add the document to Bookmarks.

Started happening when I updated Chrome.

For last week or so (since beginning of Aug 2024) I have been experiencing issues with Figma in Chrome on Mac where keyboard shortcuts do not work, including:

  • CMD+C to copy
  • CMD+V to paste
  • CMD+D to duplicate
  • OPT+L to collapse layers menu
  • OPT+\ to show/hide UI

Experiencing in both UI3 and previous UI

Mac Sonoma 14.5
Chrome is up to date
Version 127.0.6533.100 (Official Build) (x86_64)

Have tried disabling all Chrome extensions and makes no difference.

Sometimes the keyboard shortcuts work, but mostly fail.

Interestingly, the CMD+D shortcut often triggers the Bookmarks interface.

Has someone tried to implement a bookmarking feature in Figma that is messing with use of keyboard shortcuts?

I am also experiencing this issue as of this morning. I am in UI3.

Keyboard shortcuts work when youā€™re in the live screen editing area. If you are in the layers panel, they are all ignored.

@Martyn_Bowis I also experience the bookmark issue, but I believe that is purely because no shortcuts are working. So, it is just triggering Chromeā€™s own shortcuts. Another example is Ctrl + G which would typically group your selection, but it triggers Chromeā€™s search cycle command.

As per this thread:

Interestingly, the CMD+D shortcut often triggers the Bookmarks interface. Jeff_Jacobs suggests this is because the keyboard shortcuts is simply failing and this is the default.

Can you please fix the keyboard shortcuts bug urgently.

Thanks,
Martyn
