Variables distinguish between auto layout gap and padding

I was thinking the same thing recently. It would make perfect sense to give us the freedom to differentiate further if needed, as it would allow me as design system administrator to have the right variables show up in the right place for colleagues to improve clarity by reducing the shown variables.

Yes, this would be great so we can control them separatly and also avoid applying a “padding-variable” to a Gap :)

Yes please, this is an absolute must! It is only normal to have separate values for Padding and Gap, it is very necessary to scope those out separately.
