[LAUNCHED] All plans should offer more than 4 variable modes

It would be great if the professional plan offered more than 4 variable modes. Right now I want to set up a mode for each component size-- XS - XL, 5 sizes all together-- which puts me over the 4 limit for pro, but well under the 40 limit for enterprise, which is a quantity I will never need. And there’s no use case for enterprise at all for a team our size.

I think 10-12 modes for pro would be perfect to give small teams like mine room to grow before we reach the scale where an enterprise plan would be worth consideration.

It’s finally here - mode count updates across Pro and Org.

Pro → 10
Org → 20

I want to thank everyone who posted in this thread - we used a lot of the responses here to inform the mode increase decision. Happy theme swapping y’all :)

Please increase the number of available modes for Organisation plan to be double. There should at least be difference between Professional and Organisation given the cost difference between the two. We only need 2x more than we have, not the 10x that you get by paying so much more for Enterprise.

This post is 1yr old - we are on the enterprise plan and 4modes on that plan is such a frustration - you cant even create enough modes to create a collection with all breakpoints

Please increase the number of available modes for Organisation plan to be double. There should at least be difference between Professional and Organisation given the cost difference between the two. We only need 2x more than we have, not the 10x that you get by paying so much more for Enterprise.

You are falling for the scam.
The limitation to any number is artificial!!! Just remove the cap altogether.

In the same way that there is no limit on the number of cat pictures I can import into a single figma design file, there should be no limit to the number of modes!

This is unbelievable. I spent a lot of time learning about Variables, and integrating our design system with them, only to realize later that only 4 modes are available, which basically makes this whole feature useless.

There are obviously no good reason for this limit, it can't possibly require a lot of resources from Figma to support more modes.

This hostile move is making me completely reconsider my opinion of Figma. I thought it was a tool I could rely on for all design work, but I will now use Penpot for all future projects. It might not be as performant, but I never want to be stuck with such a hostile product decision again in the future.

FWIW, here’s my suggestion:

Plan comparison showing proposed Variable Mode limits: 10 for Professional and 20 for Organization (up from the current limit of 4). Enterprise remains unchanged…hoping that’s just a tech limit.

One thing I find a bit funny though is that you rightfully recognised that the limitation is arbitrary, yet you proceed to propose a chart that is as arbitrary as Figma’s limit. 😅

We need unlimited modes. Full stop.
