Seriously Figma just fix this… It’s just ridiculous at this point.

Please stop with this 4 modes limit, or make it easy select the variables from the other Collections.

Under Appearance > Apply Variable Mode I can’t see the other collections, unless I edit each of the Child elements of my Component :/

I cannot describe how annoyed I am that the price jump is nearly triple the cost for making the feature useful rather than totally useless

It's really a joke, only Enterprise plan (not available for freelancers or small companies according to an answer I got, and costing like more than 4K) have more than 4 variable modes!

It’s two years late, but it’s finally here.

It’s finally here - mode count updates across Pro and Org.

Pro → 10
Org → 20

I want to thank everyone who posted in this thread - we used a lot of the responses here to inform the mode increase decision. Happy theme swapping y’all :)

It’s not “here”, it’s just pushed back a bit, giving us peasants a few bread crumbs…

We are a small business, on the Professional plan. We have 8 clients currently, each with their version of our themable app.

I just don’t see myself spending days reimplementing our design with variables , knowing well that I will hit the 10 limit very soon. Even if we move to the Organisation plan, the 20 limit is still ridiculous.

I don’t understand why people in this thread suggested bumping the limit to small numbers like 10 or 20. It still means that this feature doesn’t scale like a business does.

I can only try to reassure myself by watching the progress Penpot is making on their new renderer. See

I agree with you. If you're a freelancer, you may well need more than 10 or 20 modes. Keep the features needed by teams in large companies for the higher plans, but not the variables. Why these limits? Do the necessary resources cost that much?
Furthermore, if I need 40 modes as a freelancer, I cannot even subscribe to the plan, which is reserved for large organisations.
In reality, it's as absurd as if you decided to allow only 4 different fonts for the Free plan, 10 fonts for the Pro plan, etc.

Absolutely man, people that suggested that are so brainwashed by dirty business practices that they consider it the new normal. A limit to any number is completely arbitrary and people seem to just submissively accept it and even be thankful when they finally get an apple after years of eating a slice of bread on the daily.

How can a lot be so blinded by hype...

Wait, they now also removed the 4 modes from the free plan!

I am a solo designer and I work on many small products with the same style. Releasing extended collections only for companies makes no sense and has no technical reason. It’s a commercial practice that is painful to see for a software that I care about. This functionality has no reason to be limited to only companies and is useful to everyone. I find myself having to create collections of collections to have more modes, which is a huge waste of time, not scalable at all and really not clean to modify.

When you know that the solution exists, that we have a paid plan that corresponds to us but that it is not included for no other reason than commercial, it is very disappointing.

Creating enterprise features for companies is perfectly logical, like more control, permissions, etc. but limiting the software for the rest is not acceptable. I pay and I don’t even have the right to enjoy the entirety of the design functionalities.
