Not really, we need folders in Projects. e.g. in the project I am working on, we have a figma project that has 31 files. Yet all of these files belong to this project. Putting them in any other project wouldn’t make sense. However having subfolders with subcategories, would make navigation easier.

Well, unless there is a technical constraint, I don’t get why cant I structure my project files. I am on a paid Team, together with my colleague designers. Inside we have our project folders. Inside each project, we have all sorts of files. Since Figma (browser) also has a constraint regarding the file size (2GB), we have to split large files into “sub-files”… Then we also have DEV and PRO files, then proposals and tests, then, then… so, bottom line, I would just like to be able to organize my files as I want. Also curious is how Figma cant organize 1, 2, 3, …9 and then 10 comes before 1. So my list view shows 10, 11, 12, 13, 1, 2, 3, 4 because I tried to keep things close that way. Will try A, B, C,…Sad.

Renaming your files to be 01, 02, 03… should make them come before 10, 11, 12.

Well… that is dumb… from my side (for not having tried that out) and theirs (I think I don’t have to explain why)… Either way, thank you very much Kevin!

I’m pretty sure this is a highly demanded feature and not sure why still not available for users. People design UX and UI with Figma. It should have a great UX. The dashboard is so messy

I have resorted to just creating lots and lots of projects 🤷 Issue is it takes alot of re-organising now and again.

To help, tagging will be the superior option over folders/nesting.

⚡ This feature is definitely a must. it will help ease the organizing issues with current flow ⚡

Cant believe this feature doesn’t exist - I’m starting to use Figma for creating presentations as well and i would love to keep those separated within my drafts from actual design files or feature ideas.

It would be nice to have the option to create folders inside files in Teams.

That’s such a great point! Practice what you preach Figma! 😃

When creating a project, a professional plan shows all the Figma/FigJam files upfront.

Let’s say a project E-commerce requires feature/sprint-based designs, it gets rather tedious to organize or group the file. With the help of folder structure, we will be able to group Figma and FigJam files that are part of a sprint item in a single folder, inside a project.

Sending design ideas for reference.

Hope this helps.

After 771 likes and 140 replies… Figma, is it fair to ask where we are on this? The need for a better organizational structure isn’t going away, it’s only growing with time. Please give us subfolders. It’s so deeply weird that we can’t make subfolders. It’s not just an inconvenience - we’re structuring our teams and our projects around it, and these take time.

Elliot_Roberts

Yeah, reading Travis2’s comment, totally agree. Now 772, 141 replies.

I’ve come here looking to see if subfolders will be a thing, would find it super helpful for the design team to archive older project files etc

Melissa_Mazza-Chiong

Figma- Subfolders are so important for our growing business and with the amount of clients we have. Is this something you foresee happening?

Dear Figma team,

I love Figma, and I use it every single day. By product of that is that I created 100+ files (that every now and then I need to use again) and I believe other users have even more. So after a while finding files is honestly a mess. I use the favourites feature but that only helped me at the start, now I struggle every day to find what I need.

I am sure a simple solution like folders would fix this. Allowing us to group files into folders would help a lot. And Figma home screen would never look like a mess again XD

Please consider this idea, I am sure everyone will love this simple feature.

Thanks in advance,

Tin M.

Tin_Majetic

Oh thanks for letting me know. I’m definitely voting on that one😉

Being able to add tags to files, just as you can add tags to Figma plugins, and have the application search using the tags to populate results has become a necessity.

Users need to search in Figma for files that have a specific tag, rather than relying on the title of the file. One file can apply to several different teams/tech stacks/backends/etc, so it is not possible to have it in different projects under different teams, and maintaining duplicate files is unrealistic at scale.

Folders or another organizing layer would be helpful, but I believe File Tagging is the most optimal way forward. Users can filter/sort/organize their own files with tags, and tags make searching more reliable and flexible without complicating the file name.

Was a Macromedia Fireworks forever then once owned by Adobe, then switched to Sketch for the next decade. While still love that product, can see the writing on the wall that the momentum behind Figma, especially with Adobe purchasing means eventually Figma maybe the best long term tool. The lack of folders for organization however, would be a non-starter at this point. The idea of in 2023 having only one level of folders (Projects), seems mystifying. Would need at least three levels of depth, but of course ideally there wouldn’t be a limitation. Hopefully by next year this will be resolved, when I give it another serious look.

It would be great alongside the teams function to have a folder structure so that designs can be organised against projects or organised by status so that when you have lots of designs its easy to find the design you need.

  • February 7, 2023

I’m VERY close to switching because of this. A LOT of conversation over something that should’ve been built from the beginning…you can even organize Outlook emails for God’s sake!

  • February 7, 2023

I’m recommending to my organization to switch to Sketch or Adobe XD. I just wasted half an hour going through this thread…2 YEARS of conversation with no resolution which shows me Figma doesn’t care about this ELEMENTARY request to help us organize our work!!!

Dmitry_Farion

It would be cool to have tags for files. So users would be able to filter files by tags. Also we need list of filter presets like Jira.

Nozima_Siyaeva

I can’t believe this is still an issue. I came here to find how to create folders to organize my files and surprise surprise it’s not possible…yet? wow 2023 and still an issue to create a folder…just wow
