Just to clarify, if you are the owner, you can transfer ownership of any file to another collaborator. This could be someone on your team, or an external collaborator, if you’re working in your drafts.

Hi. Has there been any progress on this issue? I work at a large firm and we’ve had instances where the file owner leaves the company and then that file becomes inaccessible to everyone else in the firm. I know they could transfer ownership, however, most owners have dozens if not hundreds of files and if someone leaves the company they may not have time to go over each file they own and transfer. Most people don’t even know they have to do this. It’s becoming a huge issue. Are there any alternatives to ensure everyone continues to have access to any files that a former employee used to own before they were deleted from the system?

Our team uses votes to gauge overall interest, and since we haven’t had any votes so far, this hasn’t been prioritized.

Agreed, and for the same reasons. I would like to see multiple file owners and organization-owned files.

We now have files that are owned by a former employee and the only way I know to transfer them is to export and import. (Surprisingly, duplicating a file preserves ownership.)

I would also like to have multiple ownership since people within my organisation sometimes requests access to projects and it seems I am the only one who can grant them the access. I would like that some of my fellow UX designer colleagues could also grant the access if I am away.

Chiming in here as a project manager for a design and development agency. My job is to facilitate communication with our clients on projects. It’s great that the owner of the file (usually the designer or creative director) is notified when comments are logged by the client so when client review is completed and the designer is tasked to apply requested changes they can see them. However as the project manager we encourage client’s to use the comment feature to ask questions as well. Could be about what the options are or functionality related to a specific UI feature. Answering those questions is my job to address quickly so the client can factor the answer into any changes they request. It would be great to create the ability to add Project Manager emails to a setting in the Figma file so we can be notified and provide timely responses. Consider this a feature request for new releases of the product. I’m sure I’m not the only one who feels this should really be available in Figma.

Just wondering if there’s an update on this? We have encountered this issue at our company. One engineer was the file owner and he left the organisation. We don’t have a way of transferring ownership. Plus we only have about 2 licences (department distribution) and we switch among the team when required (as we don’t need everyone to have one). Would there be a way of creating a project with multiple files and the project owner automatically have access to all files in the project?

Right now, when changing the owner of an existing project, Figma will transfer the ownership of the project and any files within it to the new owner.
