Bind a variable to a component variant switch via the API like in the UI?

In the UI I have no issue making these bindings (see image below). How can I do this using the API? it seems the variant property is not a valid option in the VariableBindableNodeField.

I assume this would be achievable in code since this option is exposed in the UI. Does anyone know what I might be missing here?
