I’m desperately trying to understand why this is happening, but whenever I type in the character ● in one of my text layers, nothing is displayed, but I know that Figma is registering it because the layer name becomes “●●●”.

Some fonts are missing various symbols. If you see the inserted character as a space (empty), then this means that the selected font doesn’t have this character. Try changing the font to something else, or use this symbol: • (U+2022).
