Question

404 when sharing prototype

hb.pencil

I am using Figma to create a prototype of my Portfolio, which I then share with outside companies and viewers. I pay for a monthly plan so that I can share this prototype freely without worrying about viewers accessing the rest of the file. I've recently been notified that there is a 404 error when trying to access my prototype.

The permissions for the file are set to "Anyone - Can View", and obviously the file is not deleted, so there should be no issues triggering the 404 message. I searched for information about this problem and was told (via your AI chatbot) to clear my cache. I did so, but when asking the chatbot if clearing my cache would help others access the file, the bot said "the cache clearing process simply refreshes your connection to Figma and helps resolve any permission-related issues on your end."

Now I feel uncertain that I can share my prototype with confidence, and I suspect that I have missed out on job opportunities because hiring managers have not been able to access my file.

Additionally, your chatbot said "note: If you make any changes to the prototype options, it will modify the URL, so always share the most recent link." Which really worries me, since I close and re-open Figma every couple days, and therefore have to open my prototype, select "fit height and width" in order to share the prototype. Have I been re-setting my prototype link every time I do this? I'm really confused and don't feel confident in your product.

Please help me understand best practices around sharing prototypes. Thank you

Following up with more developments - opened two recently shared links in a new browser, using incognito mode, and both loaded correctly. One of the links was showing as 404 to an outside viewer after a few days of working fine, so this inconsistency is baffling.

Hi @hb.pencil, Thank you for contacting us!

I get that the people you shared the file link with are seeing a 404 error when they click it. Thanks for letting us know—I understand how frustrating that can be.

I noticed you submitted a support ticket that included a prototype link. Is this the specific link that is generating the 404 error? Using an incognito window in Chrome, I tested the link and confirmed the prototype loads successfully on my end.

Users sometimes encounter a 404 error because the link they're trying to access gets unexpectedly cut off, often when it's shared through messaging apps.

Could you ask the people you shared the link with to check their browser's address bar to see if any parts of the link are missing (like "[...]”) before they get the 404 error?

If the link is being cut off, you might want to try sharing a shorter link or use a link shortening service. That should help make sure the whole link gets shared correctly.

We hope this information is helpful. Thank you again for reaching out.
